Who Thrives at Bishop’s

Bishop’s is a place for students who want more than a degree- they want community, mentorship, and the freedom to shape an education that reflects all of their interests. Our small classes, supportive faculty, and deeply involved campus life make it easy for students to feel known, included, and encouraged from day one.

Here, students explore across disciplines, build meaningful relationships, and join a multicultural community in the heart of Sherbrooke, a bilingual city. It’s an environment where curiosity is rewarded, individuality is celebrated, and students are supported to grow into confident, capable graduates.

What makes Bishop’s Unique?

Bishop’s has consistently ranked among the best in the country for student satisfaction, and is consistently ranked among the top in student services by Maclean’s University Rankings.

With fewer than 3,000 students, Bishop’s offers a highly personal learning environment where students are known and supported.

  • Flexible, interdisciplinary programs

Students can combine majors, minors, and courses across disciplines and faculties—building broad, adaptable skills aligned with their interests and goals.

  • Experiential learning is built in

Students gain real-world experience through co-ops, internships, practicums, undergraduate research, global exchanges, and hands-on projects — from business consulting to classroom placements to work on our educational farm.

  • Affordable and accessible

Sherbrooke’s cost of living is approximately 36% lower than Montreal and 48% lower than Toronto. More than 60% of Bishop’s students receive scholarships, bursaries, or financial aid.

Bishop’s is located about two hours from Montreal’s YUL international airport. Located in Lennoxville, a mostly anglophone borough of Sherbrooke, students gather from more than 70 countries around the world to meet on our legendary campus.

Understanding Majors, Minors, and Double Majors

A major is the main field of study. For example, a student can complete a Bachelor of Arts with a major in psychology, environmental studies, criminology, management, theatre, or one of our many programs. The requirements for a major vary depending on the chosen program.

A minor is a complementary field of study. It allows adding a second specialization to the student’s path and deepening another field of interest. Some faculties also offer concentrations within a program.

Some people choose a double major or honours program, including advanced courses and research opportunities.

Once the student’s first session has begun, their academic advisor will be able to help them determine if a minor or concentration might be a good addition to their program.

This structure promotes both depth and versatility. Students are encouraged to take courses outside their main discipline or even their faculty. This interdisciplinary approach prepares them to think critically, to adapt, to discover their passions and to explore varied and unexpected career paths.

Sample Academic Combinations

  • A double major in Economics and Political Studies, for careers in public policy, law, or international development.

  • A Business major with a minor in Global Studies, ideal for work in international markets or non-profit sectors.

  • A Psychology major with a minor in Music or Philosophy, supporting careers in education, counselling, or community outreach.

  • A Biology major with a minor in Drama, helpful for future teachers, science communicators, or arts-based health practitioners.

  • An Honours in English Literature with a minor in Creative Writing, for students interested in publishing, journalism, or graduate studies.
