Invitation for proposals for academic year 2023-2024

Dr. Richard H. Tomlinson (Bishop’s-B.Sc.’43 and DCL’89), a distinguished alumnus of both Bishop’s and McGill, passed away on January 28, 2018 in his 95th year. He is known as the single largest donor in Bishop’s history ($6.8 million).

Richard Tomlinson attended Bishop’s from 1940 to 1943. He contributed to the Mitre and the Yearbook, starred on the ski team, played basketball, and was Secretary-Treasurer of the Students Association and a member of the chess team. At the same time, he climbed the ranks of the Officer Training Corps to Company Sergeant-Major.

Dr. Tomlinson graduated with a degree in Physics and Chemistry and was awarded both the Governor General’s and Lieutenant Governor’s medals as the top student in his class. He went on to earn a PhD from McGill University in 1948 and then began his career teaching Chemistry at McMaster University. After retiring in 1988, he became the founding director of Gennum Corporation, the world’s largest manufacturer of microchips for hearing aids.

In 1989, he was welcomed back to Bishop’s to receive a DCL, notably for his work as a professor, researcher, entrepreneur and philanthropist. In 1998, the University was equally proud to honor him with the Alumnus of the Year award in recognition of his dedication to Bishop’s. In 2004, Richard Tomlinson was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada.

When asked why he has continued to support the University, Dr. Tomlinson explained: “Bishop’s gave me a great start to my education and paved the way for my further studies and a great career. I’m happy to help students benefit from the same opportunities.”

Dr. Tomlinson’s gift provides students with experiential learning opportunities related to their academic program, while earning money to offset their educational costs. As a result of this donation, funds will be made available again this year to undertake specific internships at Bishop’s University during the 2023-2024 academic year.

Application Procedure

Who can submit an application? Bishop’s University’s Directors, Managers, Coordinators or Departmental Chairs can submit an application.

Duration of internships: Minimum of ten weeks (over one semester) and maximum of twenty weeks (over two semesters).

Eligibility: All full-time students are eligible to be hired as student interns.

Application requirements: 

All applications should include the following:

  1. The proposal should provide a detailed description of the internship project and the tasks to be accomplished. It should also indicate how the internship tasks and responsibilities are integrated with the student’s academic program.
  2. Must include a detailed budget proposal (number of hours needed per week and the total per semester). The student should not be required to work more than ten hours per week.
  3. Internships are awarded on an annual basis with no promise of renewal from year to year.

Terms and Conditions for Successful Applicants

Payment regulations

  1. The student can work a maximum of ten hours per week.
  2. The student intern will be paid minimum wage.
  3. As of May 1st, 2023, the minimum wage in Quebec is $15.25 per hour.
  4. The maximum award of any Tomlinson Internship is set at $3378 (this includes benefits). Calculation: e.g. $16.89 x 10 hours max. per week x 10 weeks per semester = $1689 x 2 semesters = $3378.

Responsibilities of the hiring department

  1. To advertise the internship through the Career and Transition Services office. Postings must be submitted using the online form by the end of August 2023: submit a job posting.
  2. To make sure the candidate is eligible to work in Canada.
  3. To inform the office of the Dean of Student Affairs of the successful candidate’s name immediately after hiring. The student’s name must be sent via email to Kyle Pye at
  4. To complete hiring procedures with the Human Resources office in a timely manner.
  5. To ensure that the hours worked by the student are submitted to payroll in a timely manner and by the end of the fiscal year (by April 30, 2024).
  6. To ensure that the payment to the student intern does not exceed the amount granted.

Responsibilities of the student intern

  • To submit two letters to the attention of the Dean of Student Affairs: the first by December 16, 2023 and the second by March 17, 2024. The letters should be submitted by email to Each letter must include the following:
    • the specific tasks that they are required to do and the percentage of time spent on each one;
    • the learning piece acquired that is directly linked to their study program.
  • To submit a letter of appreciation by March 17, 2024 or before to Dr. Tomlinson’s niece, Mrs. Anne Kent. The letter should be submitted by email to The letter will then be forwarded to Mrs. Kent.
  • To add this internship activity to the ENGAGE Program if they wish to.
