Chapeau, les filles is a competition that aims to underscore the efforts made by women who have registered and excelled in programs typically dominated by men and that aim to pursue careers in male-dominated fields. Sabrina D’Amour, an undergraduate student in the Department of Physics, received the Prix Relève (MESI) – Excelle Science at a gala held at the National Assembly of Quebec on June 18, 2018. This prestigious award, accompanied by a $3000 cash prize, is awarded by the ministère de l’Économie, de la Science et de l’Innovation.

Sabrina’s interest in astrophysics and her eagerness to understand how the universe functions dates back to her childhood. “I would be the one teaching my parents about things that I had learned,” she says. “Do you know what a supernova is, dad? It’s a star that explodes!”

Curious and passionate, Sabrina opted for a multidimensional program of study that has allowed her to discover many spheres of learning: natural sciences, teaching science at the high school level, health science, and, by coming to Bishop’s University, continuing her training in her second language, English. Her greatest achievement, however, is obtaining a contract as a research assistant on exoplanets with the Canadian Space Agency, thanks to her teacher, Dr. Jason Rowe. After completing her degree in Physics, Sabrina hopes to go on to medical school and perhaps join the Canadian Forces in order to pursue her dream of becoming an astronaut. This career path will allow her to apply and use knowledge stemming from many fields: astronomy, medicine, geology, and engineering, among others.

The Prix Relève (MESI) – Excelle Science is a significant achievement for Sabrina, who hopes to embrace her passion for science and to bring innovative ideas to the table in a field that is dominated by men. “Men learn from women, but women also learn from men. So women should do more than just take their place in a male-dominated environment, they need to share with their colleagues and bring their own perspective to the table.”

Bishop’s University is extremely proud of its students who, through learning opportunities, aspire to become skilled leaders.
