The Writing Centre Winter 2026 Workshop Series

February 2: A Step-by-Step Guide to Building an Academic Paper

This interactive workshop breaks down the writing process into manageable steps. Participants will practice turning broad ideas into focused topics, producing strong thesis statements, mapping clear outlines, and drafting introductory paragraphs. Participants will leave with practical tools they can apply to their own assignments and a draft starting point for their paper.

February 9: The Mechanics of Academic Writing: Structure and Flow

This workshop focuses on the mechanics of academic writing: the sentence- and paragraph-level choices that help ideas flow clearly and logically. Participants will learn practical strategies for improving readability, coherence, and organization, including how to design effective paragraphs and sentences, use cohesion and parallelism, and apply the known–new principle. The workshop emphasizes how these strategies work together to support clear, reader-focused academic writing across disciplines.

February 16: Easy Ways to Improve Your Writing Style

Do you wonder why your essays come back to you are returned with comments like unclear or wordyThis is because good Effective academic writing is very clear and concise.  By attending the The Easy Ways to Improve Your Writing Style workshop, it will show you how to weed a first draft of unnecessary words, simplify overly complex sentence structures, and find the best precise words to suit your texts.

February 23: Punctuation Made Easy

Confused by commas? Intimidated by semicolons? Join Laura for a workshop that demystifies the most common punctuation mistakes preventing you from turning in a polished, academic paper. Explanations, examples and exercises will solidify your understanding of how these small (but mighty!) symbols clarify meaning and structure sentences.
