Undergraduate Student, Anne Minaki: the RECAPER Project

Anne Minaki chose Bishop’s University for its small and welcoming community, where students have the opportunity to get to know their professors and gain early research experience. Wanting to continue her studies at an Anglophone institution, she was drawn to the university’s beautiful campus during her first visit. She is currently a second-year student pursuing a BA in Pre-Clinical Psychology with a minor in Biology. Her interest in neuroscience and psychology began in elementary school after discovering National Geographic’s Brain Games book. Since then, she has remained committed to building a career in the field.

Anne is involved in the RECAPER project, under the supervision of Dr. Suzanne Hood, which investigates how the implementation of Evidence-Based Instructional Practices (EBIPs) in community college Anatomy & Physiology (A&P) classrooms in the United States can improve student passing rates. These A&P courses, often prerequisites for many nursing programs, are known for their high failure rates. Contributing to a project aimed at meaningfully increasing student success has been a valuable experience for her. Her early involvement in research has provided her with a range of skills, including interview transcribing, coding for thematic analysis, and conducting literature searches. These skills will be useful throughout her academic and professional career. This experience has also broadened her understanding of qualitative and educational research. Being able to observe how a research project is carried out and analyzed confirmed her enjoyment of the research process and will influence how she approaches her own future projects.

Anne maintains a balance between her academic, research, and personal life by creating & respecting her organized schedules that prioritize her coursework and research deadlines. She also values spending time outdoors and stays actively involved in several BU clubs each semester to stay connected with the campus community.

With a long-term goal of becoming a clinical neuropsychologist, Anne hopes to pursue a career in academia. After completing her undergraduate degree at Bishop’s, she plans to attend graduate school, most likely in Canada.
