The Art of Variation: Baroque Tradition and Innovation with Accademia de’ Dissonanti

Cellist and gambist Elinor Frey, together with her colleague harpsichordist Nicola Canzano from the ensemble Accademia de’ Dissonanti, will present The Art of Variation concert on Friday, January 24, at 8:00 p.m. as part of the Musique Chez Nous series. The program features traditional Baroque compositions by Arcangelo Corelli, Antonio Vivaldi, and Giuseppe Clemente Dall’Abaco, along with contemporary works by Elinor Frey and Nicola Canzano. A pre-concert talk with the artist, hosted by Professor Mathieu Désy, will take place at 5:00 p.m. in the Bandeen Hall at Bishop’s University. 

Winner of the 2023 Juno Award for Classical Album of the Year and the 2024 Opus Prize in the Medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque Music category, Elinor Frey is a renowned Canadian-American cellist, gambist, and researcher. Her albums with Passacaille Records and Analekta (Outhere Music) – many of which are world premiere recordings – include Giuseppe Clemente Dall’Abaco’s Cello Sonatas (listen), recipient of a Diapason d’Or, and Early Italian Cello Concertos

Elinor is the artistic director of Accademia de’ Dissonanti, an ensemble dedicated to musical interpretation and research. She has performed across the Americas and Europe in recitals and with numerous chamber ensembles and orchestras, including the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra, Rosa Barocca, Constantinople, Il Gardellino, Tafelmusik, and the Pacific Baroque Orchestra. As a guest leader with ensembles such as the London Symphonia (Ontario), Kingston Baroque Consort, Dorian Baroque, and Siren Baroque, she specializes in Galant and early Classical ensemble repertoire. 

General admission tickets are available for $30, while all students are admitted free of charge (with valid student ID). However, students must still secure a ticket in advance or at the concert. Tickets can be purchased online at LePointdevente, by phone through the Centennial Theatre box office at 819-822-9692, or at the door before the concert. 

The Musique Chez Nous concert series is presented in collaboration with the organization La Route des concerts. Established in 1983, the series is student-led and designed to appeal to all tastes. It features local musicians, guest artists, and university music faculty.
