Environmental Awareness and Education

Part of the second objective of our Sustainable Development Plan is to create awareness and incite action for a sustainable community. Bishop’s accomplishes this by hosting various educational activities and supports emerging grassroots projects on campus through mentorships and funding.

Eco-Week

The traditional Eco-Week happens the first or second week of February and is an environmentally focused week full of various activities co-hosted by the SD Office and The Environmental Club. A wide variety of activities are offered, such as environmental conferences and movie screenings, workshops, arts and crafts, thrift shop, Eco Gait night, mini market and much more! To get involve, please contact the SDSI (sdsi@ubishops.ca).

Green Levy Fund

Did you know that Bishop’s offers funding for student-led sustainability projects? The Green Levy Fund is a way for students to pursue their own sustainable development projects at B.U. with the support of the sustainable development intern, the SRC and the University’s sustainable development advisor.

The Green Levy Fund is open to all students and has two submission dates annually, November 1st and February 1st. The jury consists of the members of the Sustainable Development Action Group (SDAG).

We want to hear from you! Submit your idea!

To have detailed information about the Green Levy Fund: Consult the recorded online info session on Facebook.

Educative Kiosks and Talks

Our annual environmental education activities calendar usually look like this:

Promoting Careers in Sustainability

We work closely with Bishop’s Careers and Transition Services on projects that promote green jobs both on and off campus!

Many opportunities exist for students to forge an academic and professional path that allows them to be an agent of change. Below are some websites that can inspire you in this direction.

Sustainable Development Student Internship Opportunities (SDSI)

Sustainable Development Student Interns at the kiosk for winter baskets

Every semester, we hire sustainable development student interns (SDSI) to support the work of the Sustainable Development Office and develop projects on campus! We also hire one Sustainable Development Graduate Intern (SDGI) to offer a first work opportunity in the field of sustainability to a recent graduate from Bishop’s. This is the perfect opportunity for students to experiment the campus as a living laboratory and acquire hands-on experience in sustainability.

Internships usually offered are:

  • 2 part-time SDSI for every academic semester.
  • 1 full-time SDGI every year for a 6-month internship.
  • 2 full-time SDSI during the summer.
