Getting Started with Registration

Students who have accepted an offer of admission and returning students are eligible to register for courses online through myBU when the registration period opens.

New students will have received their login information via email. If you have trouble logging in to myBU, please contact the Admissions Office at 819-822-9600 ext. 2680 to verify your login information.

You should plan your course selections in consultation with your Faculty/School and Department’s sections of the Academic Calendar. If you have questions regarding course selection, program requirements, schedule conflicts, and/or program changes, please speak with your Academic Advisor or Departmental/Program Chairperson.

We recommend you use the timetable grid worksheet and the PDF timetable when registering for courses to help prepare a conflict-free schedule.

You can view a campus map in order to determine where courses are being offered.

Terminology

Self-Service: Self-service refers to the password-protected myBU site that gives you access to your course schedule, registration, payment of fees, etc.

Degree: A degree refers to the designation you earn after a completing university studies, for example, a Bachelor’s of Education (B.Ed.) or Master’s of Science (M.Sc.).

Major: A Major is a main program of study in a discipline at the undergraduate level. A Major generally leaves enough space in a degree for exploration outside of the chosen program.

Honours: An Honours is a main program of study in one discipline at the undergraduate level. Honours programs require a higher degree of specialization than a Major in the same discipline and are primarily for those planning to pursue graduate studies. Honours programs often require the completion of an independent final project or thesis.

Minor: A Minor a secondary program of study in one discipline that provides a basic introduction to the methodology and key concepts of a subject.

Add/drop deadline: Last day to add/drop a course for the semester with no financial penalty.

Withdraw with Permission (WP): Withdrawing from a course after the add/drop deadline but before the Withdraw with Permission (WP) deadline. Fees are not refunded, and the student’s part-time or full-time status is not affected. The notation WP will appear on the student’s transcript for the course. Not attending class or informing the professor of an intent to withdraw does not constitute an official WP.

Registration Help

Academic Advising: Students do not require academic advising to register into courses. However, academic advising is available for all students through their Academic Advisors and/or their Departmental Chairpersons.

Registration questions may be directed to the Registrar’s Office: records@ubishops.ca.

If you are facing technical issues with registration, contact the ITS Helpdesk: helpdesk@ubishops.ca.

Registering for Courses

  • You have resources across campus to give advice and guidance, but you are responsible for the completeness and accuracy of your course selection and registration, and for abiding by the University’s policies and deadlines.
  • Students can register for the upcoming semester only.
  • Registration priority is given to students closest to completing their degree.
  • Failure to register online during the official registration period may result in an inconvenient schedule and/or the inability to take mandatory courses in their required sequence.

How to register:

In advance of registering online, be sure to:

  • Consult your email for general information related to registration dates and procedures.
  • Consult the Tutorials section on the Registrar’s Office myBU page and read the document “How to Register for Courses in Self-Service”.
  • Once you are satisfied with your course registration, verify your schedule in myBU Self-Service.

To facilitate the process and prepare a conflict-free schedule, we recommend you use a printed copy of the timetable grid worksheet and the PDF timetable.

You can view a campus map in order to locate where courses are being offered.

If you need guidance, contact your Academic Advisor or Departmental Chairperson(s).

Time Conflict:
You will not be permitted to register for courses where any of the class or lab hours conflict with another course.

Course load:
A normal course load is 15 course credits per semester for undergraduate studies, and 9 course credits per semester for graduate studies.

Language courses:
Students trying to register in language courses may require prerequisite courses or permission from the instructor. Please contact the Chairperson of the department.

Interested in studying French as a Second Language next semester?
A French Placement Test is required for those without High School French who want to take a French course for the first time at B.U. Please take our French Placement Test on Moodle within the two-week period before registration opens, to know which course(s) to register for according to your level.

Prerequisites:
You may not register for a course with prerequisites unless you have successfully completed the required prerequisite(s). Exchange and visiting students who completed a prerequisite at another institution must obtain permission from the relevant department Chair before registering.

Important Dates & Regulations

You are responsible for familiarizing yourself with the Sessional Dates and abiding by all published deadlines.

Note: The Withdrawn with Permission (WP) deadline can be found in the Sessional Dates for each semester. Find fee information related to the WP process in the Fees and Payments section.

Fees and Payments

You will find tuition and fee rates, payment methods, and payment deadlines on the Tuition and Fees web page.

Scholarships, Awards, and Bursaries: If you are receiving a scholarship, award, and/or bursary from Bishop’s, note that the funding for the current semester can only be applied after add/drop deadline. This allows Student Accounts to confirm you are meeting the eligibility requirements for the funding. This can sometimes only be finalized very close to the payment deadline. Because of this, to know how much you need to pay yourself before the payment deadline, look at the total you owe on your final student statement and remove the funding you are receiving from Bishop’s this semester.

Course withdrawal and Refunds:

The amount you are charged depends on when you drop or WP from a course:

  • Dropped before the add/drop deadline: you will not be charged for the course.
  • Withdrawn with Permission (WP) for non-medical reasons: no refund, you will owe the full amount for this course.
  • Withdrawn with Permission (WP) for medical reasons (with medical documentation): A 50% pro-rated tuition refund may be granted, based on the number of classes held before your WP request was submitted. This refund applies to tuition only — there is no refund (partial or full) for any other fees.
