Academic regalia underline the graduand’s academic success during academic ceremonies, referring to the traditions in higher education since medieval times.

The academic dress for graduands at Convocation Day consists of:

  • Gowns
  • Hoods
  • Mortarboards

Gowns

Gowns mean the “toga” that members of the university wear during the Convocation Ceremony. According to university traditions, the graduands wear black gowns.

Usually, gowns are kept open during the ceremony so that the clothing underneath can be seen. We suggest business casual attire to graduands.

Please note that gowns are provided to graduands free of charge for Convocation Day by Bishop’s provider and must be returned after the Ceremony. Unreturned gowns are billed $350.

Hoods

Hoods complement the academic regalia and vary in style, colour and adornments depending on the wearer’s degree.

During academic ceremonies, academic members and new graduands wear caps that indicate that they completed a higher education program.

Bishop’s mortarboards that are given to graduands are a keepsake and do not need to be returned.
