Bishop’s University Musical Theatre presents: “The Impossible Dream: A Broadway Musical Revue”

Step into a world where music swells, time bends, and an abandoned theatre is revived through the rhythms of Broadway. This spring, Bishop’s University’s drama and music departments proudly present The Impossible Dream, an original musical revue inspired by timeless Broadway classics. Performances will take place at Turner Studio Theatre from May 30 to June 8, 2025.

The Impossible Dream starts with demolition plans that threaten the last cultural icon in the region – the local theatre that has lost its sources of revenue. Memories from the theatre’s glorious part come alive to protect the precious place where dreamers used to gather and imagine a bright future.

Following the success of the 2023 sold-out production of The Drowsy Chaperone, praised by La Tribune (May 30, 2023) for its “impressive quality of acting”, Bishop’s Musical Theatre actors return to the stage this spring with another brilliant production reviving the old genre of a musical revue.

Directed by Dr. Art Babayants, with musical direction by Fannie Gaudette and choreography by Chantal Carrier, the production also features set design by Kasimir MacDougall, costume design by Chris Brydon, lighting design by Bruce Lambie, sound design by Jules Beaulieu and production dramaturgy by Tomas Peck. Stage management is led by Martine Beland1. The live band includes Fannie Gaudette (keyboard), Alex Cattaneo (guitar and percussion), and Jocelyn Drainville (alto and tenor saxophones, flute, percussions).

Evening performances are scheduled for May 30, June 4, 5, 6, and 7 at 7:30 p.m., with matinées on May 31, June 1 and June 8 at 2:00 p.m. A special school performance will be held as an open dress rehearsal on May 29 at noon. All performances will take place at Turner Studio Theatre, 2600 College Street, Sherbrooke, Quebec.

This production is suitable for all ages, with a recommended audience of 10 and up.

PREMIÈRE :  Audience members will have the opportunity to hear and see the world premiere of Close your Eyes, a song written for the new musical Closet by composer and lyricist Léa-Kim HD. Born in Drummondville, Léa-Kim is the winner of the Musical Theatre Department’s call for submissions for material written in Quebec to recognize and support local Musical Theatre creators’ work.  A 2024 graduate from Université de Sherbrooke (musique, cheminement en composition et musique à l’image),  Léa-Kim HD created Closet simultaneously in French and in English.

The Bishop’s Drama and Music Departments gratefully acknowledge the generous support of the John Gallop Fund for Musical Theatre and the Desjardins Foundation, whose contributions have made this production possible.

Bishop’s University is proud to offer the only English language Musical Theatre concentration in the province of Quebec. Typically majoring in music and/or drama, the concentration allows students to explore musical theatre in depth on professional stages in a safe, bilingual, diverse and supportive environment.
