Quebec Student Financial Assistance (Aide financière aux études – AFE)

The Aide financière aux études (AFE) program provides loans and bursaries to help eligible students cover the cost of post-secondary education in Quebec. Assistance is based on financial need and can include both repayable and non-repayable support.

Loans and Bursaries for Full-Time Studies

The AFE Loans and Bursaries for Full-Time Studies Program is available to eligible students registered in full-time studies, registered in 12 or more credits per semester, including laboratory credits.

During the Spring semester, the credits required to be in full-time studies can be spread across different sessions. Students are considered full-time if their total registration across Spring sessions (May to August) adds up to 12 or more credits.

Application Timeline

Applications open mid-May each year for the upcoming academic year. Students can apply for financial assistance from mid-May until August 31 of the following year.

For example, for the 2026–2027 academic year, applications are accepted from mid-May 2026 to August 31, 2027.

Application Information

AFE will only process applications that are complete, which generally means:

  • Applicants must upload all required documents to AFE
  • If applicable, parents or spouses must complete their declarations and provide any required documents.

After processing, AFE will automatically send a request to Bishop’s University to confirm the applicant’s registration status—no action is required from the applicant for this step of verification of enrolment.

For eligibility criteria and application details, visit AFE’s loans and bursaries program for full-time studies page. It is the applicant’s responsibility to ensure that they have provided an accurate and complete application to AFE.

Tip: The annual Guide for Application for Financial Assistance

Loans and Bursaries is very helpful for full-time students applying for aid. Find this guide on the government’s “Complete a Declaration” page.

The AFE Loans and Bursaries for Part-Time Studies Program is available to eligible students registered in part-time studies, registered in 6-11 credits per semester, including laboratory credits. For eligibility criteria and application details, visit AFE’s loans and bursaries program for part-time studies page. It is the applicant’s responsibility to ensure that they have provided an accurate and complete application to AFE.

Important: This program is not available to students who are registered part-time for only one semester between two semesters of full-time studies. For example, students who are full-time in the Winter and Fall semesters but part-time in the Spring semester are not eligible to apply to the part-time program for the Spring semester.

Exception: Students registered in 6–11 credits who are deemed full-time by AFE, must apply for the full-time loans and bursaries program instead. For eligibility criteria to be deemed full-time by AFE, refer to AFE’s Full-Time Student page. This full-time designation is determined only for AFE purposes and does not affect or change a student’s academic status at Bishop’s University.

Québec Perspective Scholarship (Bourses Perspective Québec – PBPQ)

The Québec Perspective Scholarship supports eligible students enrolled in specific post-secondary programs with an intention to foster employment growth in several critical professions.

Students who meet the eligibility criteria can receive $2,500 per successful full-time semester for a maximum of $15,000 for a three-year program, or $20,000 for a four-year program.

The Quebec government has announced that the Québec Perspective Scholarship (PBPQ) program is being phased out. Students who were enrolled in an eligible program as of the Winter 2025 semester may continue to apply, provided they meet all other eligibility requirements. Students who started an eligible program in Spring 2025 or later are not eligible. For full details, refer to the government’s Eligibility Requirements page.

Eligible students must re-apply at the end of each successfully completed semester. Scholarships are paid after the successful completion of the term once confirmed by the University with the Ministry. For eligibility criteria and application details, visit the Québec Perspective Scholarship page.

Excellence Scholarships for Students in Education Programs

The Government of Quebec offers Excellence Scholarships to encourage students with outstanding academic records to enroll and remain in certified teacher training programs. These scholarships can provide up to $7,500 per year (up to $30,000 total) for eligible Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) students. To learn more about these opportunities and additional scholarships available through Bishop’s School of Education, visit the Scholarships for B.Ed. Students page.
