The SHIFT Research Centre serves as a hub and repository for research grounded in futures thinking. Centre members anticipate, adapt to, and shape change through long-term vision, responsibility, and evidence-informed foresight. Acting as a hub for researchers, administrators, coaches and participants, The Centre conducts collaborative projects to identify and influence emerging issues in sport. Through this approach, the Centre advances safe, sustainable, equitable, and high-quality sport experiences for all participants, from grassroots recreational athletes to high-performance athletes and coaches.
The Centre generates new knowledge on how training, coaching, performance science, sport cultures, sport organizations, sport participation, and communities evolve to support long-term health and well-being while advancing safe, ethical, and innovative pathways to excellence.
The Centre’s vision and scope directly support the priorities of the BU Strategic Research Plan by establishing an interdisciplinary research hub that addresses pressing societal challenges and fosters collaboration among researchers. The Centre also advances the priorities of the institutional strategic plan through its commitments to community, empowerment, and sustainability.
