Many organizations outside Bishop’s University award research scholarships to students. The most important ones are the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC), the Fonds de recherche du Québec (FRQ).

Bishop’s has access to summer research internship bursaries from NSERC and FRQSC. The allocation of the summer internship bursaries is conditional to the availability of the funds granted by the agencies.

The Fonds de recherche du Québec – Société et culture (FRQSC)

The Fonds de recherche du Québec – Société et culture provides Bishop’s University with three undergraduate research scholarships of $5,000 to allow undergraduate students in the social sciences, humanities and education to undertake a 200-hour research assistantship under the supervision of a Bishop’s University faculty member during the Summer 2024.

The faculty member involved does not have to be funded by the FRQSC in order to supervise a student.

To be eligible to hold this scholarship, students must:

  • have been registered for at least two consecutive full-time semesters or three consecutive part-time semesters in the same undergraduate program in an area covered by the FRQSC at the scholarship effective date;

AND

Complete application packages must include:

  • The application;
  • Letter of motivation (one page maximum);

Frequently asked questions

I am graduating from my undergraduate degree during Winter 2024. Am I eligible to hold a FRQSC Summer Internship during Summer 2024, after the completion of my degree requirements?

Yes, you can hold a FRQSC Summer Internship following the completion of your degree (Summer 2024), provided you have not yet started your graduate studies and you meet all other eligibility criteria. You must be registered in your undergraduate degree at the time of application. However, since this funding is to initiate students to research, it would be pertinent in this case to mention what are the plans of the student now that they are done with undergrad school.

Can I be paid by this scholarship to work on my Honours thesis?

If you are selected for this funding, nothing in the guidelines prevents you from obtaining credits while being paid by this scholarship. However, some programs might prevent you from being paid while obtaining credits, so this would be program-dependent.
