Dr. Vicki Chartrand Testifies at Quebec Provincial Inquiry on Public Services to Members of First Nation Communities

Dr. Vicki ChartrandAfter having been called to testify at a meeting of the Standing Committee on the Status of Women on Indigenous women in the federal justice and corrections systems in December 2017, Dr. Vicki Chartrand has now been called upon to speak to issues pertaining to traditional methods of healing for incarcerate Indigenous individuals at the Commission d’enquête sur les relations entre les Autochtones et certains services publics du Québec. She noted that the current system reproduces colonial methods and attitudes and that other avenues, such has houses of healing located within First Nations communities. According to Dr. Chartrand, “We must seek justice within the communities. These communities have great strengths, but just don’t have the capacity. We should invest efforts and resources in these communities, because it isn’t in the carceral system that justice will be found.”
