Graduate Studies at BU: Research in Computational Problem Solving

Tianqi Xiao, originally from China, is 23 years old. She arrived in Canada seven years ago and attended high school in Ontario. Then she went on to obtain an undergraduate degree in Computer Science from MacEwan University in Alberta. When considering her options for further study and research, the decision to come to Bishop’s University was an easy one to make. “I liked the small and friendly atmosphere here,” she says. “The Admissions Office was very helpful when the time came to apply, and I was quickly introduced to a group of students who agreed to show me around and help me get to know Sherbrooke and my new campus.” Tianqi is now registered in the thesis-based Masters of Science in Computer Science, and works under the supervision of Dr. Stefan Bruda, whose past publications had already sparked her interest. As a graduate student at Bishop’s, she hopes to focus her research on the development of formal methods and artificial intelligence, to allow computers to more efficiently solve problems. She is already making the most of studying in a small institution: “It is easy for me to make an appointment to exchange ideas with my supervisor. Moreover, a small group of students and I have formed a study group, and we keep each other accountable. This helps me focus on the work I have to do, and makes it so much more fun!”
