Minister Bibeau Announces SSHRC Grants Awarded to BU Researchers

The Honourable Marie-Claude Bibeau officially announced, on behalf of Science Minister Kirsty Duncan,  the grants awarded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council to researchers at Bishop’s University and Université de Sherbrooke during a press conference  held on January 18, 2017 at the Université de Sherbrooke. Member of National Assembly Luc Fortin as well as Ted Hewitt, president of SSHRC, were also present at this event.

Four Bishop’s University researchers were honoured at this event:

Dr. Cristian Berco (History), SSHRC Insight Grant, The Brain and the Spanish Inquisition: A Neurohistory of Toledo’s Holy Office, 1627-1650 ($75,817)

Dr. Linda Morra (English), SSHRC Insight Grant, A Life Beyond Borders: Jane Rule and the Development of a West Coast Queer Community ($54,690)

Dr. Sarah-Myriam Martin-Brûlé (Politics and International Studies), Insight Development Grant, Trained to Share: Challenges for United Nations Peacekeeping Intelligence ($43,155)

Dr. David Webster (History), SSHRC Insight Grant, Long Play: The Transnational Solidarity Movement for East Timor ($73,109)

According to Dr. Miles Turnbull, Vice-Principal Academic, Responsible for Research, “research is a fundamental part of Bishop’s University’s institutional mandate as a University in the Quebec and Canadian post-secondary landscapes and beyond. Bishop’s student and faculty researchers contribute, and must continue to contribute to the generation of new knowledge, to mobilizing this knowledge to relevant community partners and users of the research and, in doing so, contribute to innovation and economic development of the region, province and country. The SSHRC-funded research being celebrated today pertains to various spheres of the social sciences and humanities in which our researchers’ expertise is renowned nationally and internationally. The funding granted to these projects will also allow our researchers to continue to develop an international network of collaborators, be it in the United States, in Spain or in various United Nations missions, thus giving them the opportunity to pursue their excellent work in partnerships that transcend our borders.”
