Sustainable Transportation

Included in the first objective of our Sustainable Development Plan is our intention for sustainable transportation initiatives as it has been shown to reduce carbon emissions and increase healthy lifestyle habits.

Discover sustainable transportation options that are eco-friendly and efficient. Our page explores innovative solutions for reducing carbon footprints, from electric vehicles and bicycles to public transit systems. Sustainable transportation can lead to cleaner cities and a healthier planet!

B.U. by bike

Did you know that Bishop’s is a VéloSympathique certified campus? This means that we actively work to increase our infrastructure to promote cycling as a commuting habit!

VéloSympathique certified campus

We are fortunate to have La Route verte 1, a treelined bike path that connects the Bishop’s campus to Sherbrooke City downtown, which makes bicycle commuting easy and safe.

We are constantly working on improving our infrastructure on campus to increase accessibility by bike!

  • We are increasing progressively the amount of bike racks on campus.
  • We installed 2 bike repair stations (one is in front of the Nicolls building and one is behind Paterson Hall) accessible between May and November. Tools and a pump are accessible in the winter at Paterson’s front desk.
  • We gave access to showers for active riders. See the Form – access to showers in the Sports Plex – active transportation users.
  • We implemented an electric bike loan system for Bishop’s employees, which allows them to try commuting by bike, before investing money to purchase their own electric bike.

This map shows the bike paths, the bike shops, and the repair stations, both on campus and in Sherbrooke (PDF).

We are working on educating our community and building a cycling culture on campus, by:

  • Providing free drop-in bike tune-ups on campus every semester;
  • Promoting National Bike Month (in May) and Sustainable Transportation Week (third week in September);
  • Leading awareness campaigns on good practices to keep your bike safe;
  • Improving the GaiterGears Bike rental service.
  • Collaborating on inter-institutional projects to promote urban cycling in Sherbrooke, like this documentary which was co-produced in 2024 by students of the Cégep de Sherbrooke, Université de Sherbrooke, and Bishop’s University.

Gaiter Gears

Purple bicycles from the Gaiter Gears project parked in a bike rack.

Gaiter Gears was initiated by the SRC in 2015, the project allows any student, staff and faculty member to borrow a bike for free, to increase accessibility to active and sustainable transportation modes in our community. Bikes can be borrowed at the Paterson’s front desk. Please bring your Bishop’s ID card.

Secure Bike Shelter

New secure bike shelter

A new secure bike shelter will be available on campus starting September 1, 2025. The goal of the shelter is to increase the number of utilitarian bike trips to campus by providing a safe storage space that deters theft. The shelter contains 16 bike parking spaces, and restricted electronic access will be granted to members.

The cost of the bike parking permit has been set at $30 per session (Semester), as indicated below:

  • $30 for the Fall Semester (September 1 to December 31)
  • $30 for the Winter Semester (January 1 to April 30)
  • $30 for the Summer Semester (May 1 to August 31)

It is the same price for all (students, staff and faculty).

The annual schedule for space allocation and registration periods are as follows:
