The School of Education offers two graduate programs: a Master of Education (M.Ed, course-based) and a Master of Arts (M.A., thesis-based) in Educational Studies. Both programs offer a unique opportunity to advance your professional development at your pace. The program allows you to get back in the classroom as a lifelong learner, expand your skills and apply them directly to your work, and to engage with professionals in all sphere of the education system.

The flexibility in the program is designed with working professionals in mind.

  • Our program can be completed fully online or in a bimodal approach with online and in-person courses.
  • Our courses are offered in the evening (Eastern Standard Time) in a synchronous manner.
  • The programs can be completed part-time or full-time.
  • With permission of the School of Education, courses can be taken as professional development for individuals who do not wish to sign up to the program.
  • Courses are scheduled during fall, winter, spring and summer sessions, with most held in the evenings and in some cases on weekends. Summer schedules are weekdays through July and early August.

What Graduate Programs are Offered in Education at Bishop’s

Bishop’s offers both a Master of Education (M.Ed., course-based), as well as a Master of Arts in Educational Studies (M.A., thesis). Students and professionals can also pursue individual courses at any time as general interest learners.

Master of Education in Educational Studies (M.Ed.)

Quick facts:

  • Course-based program composed of 15 courses (total of 45 credits).
  • Can be taken full-time or part-time.
  • Synchronous courses in the evening.
  • Program can be completed fully online or bimodally (on-campus and online).
  • Average completion time is 2 to 3 years for a full-time student and a maximum of 6 years for part-time students.  

This program is designed for educational leaders and educators, to further their work and enrich their practice in educational institutions and in other organizational, professional, and community settings.  

Social, historical, cultural, and linguistic dimensions of education are considered, as are issues of power, diversity, gender, and marginalization in education.   

These perspectives on education and leadership may be based on sociological, historical, or linguistic foundations; they may draw on a variety of contemporary frameworks including comparative and international education, post-colonial theory and theories of decolonization, applied linguistics, sociolinguistics, discourse analysis, and critical theory. 

Master of Arts in Educational Studies (M.A.)

Quick facts:

  • Thesis-based program, total of 45 credits.
  • Can be taken full-time or part-time.
  • Synchronous courses in the evening
  • Program can be completed fully online or bimodally (on-campus and online).
  • Average completion time is 2 to 3 years for a full-time student and a maximum of 6 years for part-time students. 

This program is perfect for those willing to pursue the development of a specific inquiry through the writing of a thesis. Students in this program may choose to continue their studies at the doctorate level.   

Based on their research inquiry, they will be paired with a supervisor who will mentor them and guide the evolution of their project. 

General Interest Studies

Educators and professionals looking to take graduate courses without committing to a full degree program can apply as general interest students at any time—there are no enrollment deadlines (subject to approval by the School of Education).

If you later decide to pursue a Master of Education degree, you may transfer up to 9 credits from courses completed as a general interest student.

This flexible option allows you to explore graduate studies at your own pace while keeping the door open for future degree completion.

Graduate Program Essentials: Tuition, Funding & Admissions

Cost of Graduate Studies in the School of Education

The cost of the graduate degree in Education at Bishop’s can vary greatly depending on your situation.

Tuition and fees for a 45-credit program can range anywhere from $7,500 for Quebec residents to $45,000 for international students. Other expenses, such as for books, food and lodging must be added.

Sadiq Awan Perseverance Bursary

Thanks to a generous donor, the School of Education created the Sadiq Awan Perseverance Bursary available to all students registered in the M.A. and M.Ed. in Educational Studies.

Amount & Timeline: All students will receive a bursary of $300 per 3-credit course successfully completed. Bursaries are awarded after the grade submission deadline for the applicable semester and credited to the eligible student’s account. 

Eligibility:

  • Be a full-time or part-time student enrolled in the M.A. or M.Ed. in Educational Studies
  • Have successfully completed one or more 3-credit courses in the previous semester (includes fall, winter, and spring/summer semesters).
  • Does not apply to general interest students or students registered at Bishop’s in a different program.

Admission Requirements for a Master of Education

Applicants to the M.Ed. in Educational Studies or the M.A. in Educational Studies must:   

  • have completed a B.Ed. or related degree at a recognized university with an average of at least 75%; 
  • normally have at least two years of relevant educational experience (teaching or related professional experience); 
  • submit TOEFL, IELTS, or other equivalent English language proficiency test results with minimum scores of 80 (internet-based) for TOEFL with at least a score of 20 in each of the four components or 6.5 for IELTS with at least a score of 6.5 in each of the four components.
