Our Story

Since 1843, Bishop’s has been shaped by a belief that education is about more than what you study. It is about who you become. What began as a small university has grown into one of Canada’s oldest institutions of higher learning and a distinctive English-language university in Quebec. Through every chapter of its history, Bishop’s has remained committed to broadening minds, expanding perspectives and helping students develop the confidence to make their mark on the world.

Remember how you entered. Be proud of how you leave.

A Promise Made in 1843

When Bishop’s was founded in 1843, its founders set out to provide what they described as a “sound and liberal education.” The idea was simple but ambitious: students should leave university with more than specialized knowledge. They should leave prepared to think critically, engage with new ideas and contribute meaningfully to the world around them.

From its earliest years, Bishop’s encouraged intellectual curiosity, exploration, and a broad approach to learning. While the University has changed considerably over the decades, the commitment to a holistic education remains at the heart of the Bishop’s experience.

A Vision that Still Guides Us

For over 180 years, Bishop’s has evolved alongside the students and communities it serves.

New academic disciplines emerged. Research became an increasingly important part of university life. Students arrived from different regions, cultures and backgrounds, which helped shape the institution’s future and expand student perspectives.

Through the evolution, one belief endured: education should prepare you not only for what comes next, but also for a lifetime of learning, growth and contribution.

Today, that vision lives on through three commitments that continue to shape the Bishop’s experience.

An Education that Broadens Minds

There’s no singular path to success.

At Bishop’s, you are encouraged to explore widely, connect ideas across fields and build academic pathways that reflect your interests, passions and ambitions. Through multidisciplinary study, undergraduate research, experiential learning and close collaboration with faculty, you will gain both depth and breadth in your education.

The result is an education that prepares you not only for your first career, but also for a future that cannot always be predicted.

A Culture that Widens Worldviews

Perspective changes when you learn alongside people whose experiences differ from your own.

As an English-language university in the heart of Quebec, Bishop’s offers an environment shaped by multiple cultures, languages and perspectives. You will engage with classmates from across Quebec, Canada and around the world while experiencing daily life in one of North America’s most distinctive cultural settings.

These experiences challenge assumptions, expand perspectives, and help you develop the adaptability and cultural awareness needed to navigate an increasingly connected world.

A Community that Lifts Students Up

Meaningful connections have always been part of the Bishop’s experience. You will build relationships with professors, classmates, staff, coaches, mentors and alumni. Opportunities are accessible. Support is personal. Relationships often continue long after graduation. Bishop’s is a community where people invest in one another and where belonging grows through shared experiences.

This belonging builds confidence, opens doors to research and real opportunity on campus, and follows you into a network of 25,000+ alumni who hire, advise and show up for each other.

Shaped by Place

Bishop’s is located on the traditional territory of the Abenaki Nation.

We recognize the enduring presence of the W8banaki Nation and are committed to strengthening our relationship through acts of inclusion, consultation, visibility and reciprocity. We honour the history, traditions and stewardship of this land while creating opportunities to engage with Indigenous histories, perspectives and ways of knowing.

This commitment continues to take shape across the University, including through initiatives such as the founding of Kwigw8mna, a gathering place that supports learning, connection, community and cultural exchange.

The land itself continues to shape the Bishop’s experience. Located in Quebec’s Eastern Townships, our campus sits at the intersection of languages, cultures and communities. Students study in English while engaging daily with Quebec culture and perspectives that challenge assumptions, expand worldviews, and deepen understanding.
