    Gaiters' Turner, Gore and Poloniato off to CFL Evaluation Camp

    LENNOXVILLE – Shawn Gore, Steven Turner and Nick Poloniato from the Bishop's Gaiters football team have all been selected to participate in the 2010 Canadian Football League (CFL) Evaluation Camp, to be held this weekend in Toronto.

    This marks the fourth consecutive season that the Gaiters have had a representative at the Evaluation Camp, and the second straight year that three Gaiters have attended, following Jamall Lee, James Yurichuk and Kyle Jones last season. The other Gaiters to have attended the camp include Keith Godding (WR, 2008), Dan McCullough (DL/LS, 2007), Andrew Carter (OL, 2001) and William Wright (DE, 2001).

    The Evaluation Camp will take place in Toronto from Friday to Sunday, with more details available on the CFL's website at http://www.cfl.ca.


    Provincial champion commits to Gaiters' Men's Basketball

    LENNOXVILLE – The Bishop's University men’s basketball team announced today that Matt McLean of Ashbury College in Ottawa has committed to the Gaiters, and will be joining the team for the 2010-11 season.

    “We are pleased to welcome Matt to the Gaiter family. He is a very skilled big man, an excellent passer and he makes the players around him better,” said Rod Gilpin, the Gaiters’ Head Coach. “We expect Matt to have an immediate impact on our program, and we think that he has a lot of potential.

    McLean, a 6' 8", 200 lb. forward, has played for three years with the Ashbury Colts, where he has won two provincial championship medals. This year, he captained the Colts to the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Association (OFSAA) Class "A" championship, scoring nine points in yesterday’s final game. Earlier in the day, he made a key late dunk, as well as a free throw with no time left, to send the Colts to the provincial championship game. Last season, McLean led the Colts to a bronze medal at the provincial championship. He is a two-time team MVP, and averages 14 points and 12 rebounds per game. (More...)


    Gaiter lacrosse alum named to Team Canada

    LENNOXVILLE - Mac Allen '07 has been named to Team Canada's final roster for the 2010 World Men's Lacrosse Championships. The team made the announcement of its final 24-man roster earlier this week.

    Allen, a Toronto native, played with the Gaiters men's lacrosse team from 2003-06 and is one of seven defenders to be named to the squad. He is the only player from the Canadian University Field Lacrosse Association to make the national team.

    Allen is currently a member of the Rochester Knighthawks of the National Lacrosse League, and is in his fourth season in the NLL. He was drafted by the Toronto Nationals of Major League Lacrosse in the fourth round (24th overall) in the 2010 Supplemental Draft.

    ATHLETE OF THE WEEK:

    The Bishop's Gaiters Athletes of the Week are Onnex Blackwood of the Men's Basketball team and Katy Germain of the Women's Basketball team.

    Blackwood, fresh from being named a QUBL First Team All-Star, led the Gaiters with 19 points in the Gaiters' QUBL semifinal game on Friday night. The true freshman, who was inexplicably overlooked for the league's Rookie of the Year award, went 6-for-11 from the field and added a team-high three assists as the Gaiters returned to the postseason after a four-year absence.

    Germain, who was also named a QUBL First Team All-Star last week, led the Gaiters with 17 points in Wednesday's league semifinal at Laval. The fourth-year swingman, who won her second straight all-star nod, went 6-for-14 from the field and added four rebounds and a pair of steals.

    HONOUR ROLL:

    • Hermon Tesfaghebriel, Men's Basketball  - Closed out his career with a 15-point, 7-rebound performance at UQAM
    • Marie-Ève Lemoine, Women's Basketball - Scored ten points and grabbed a team-hihg six rebounds on Wednesday.
    • Damon Thomas-Anderson, Men's Basketball - Scored 11 points and grabbed four rebounds in his final university game on Friday

    Gaiters fall 98-70 in QUBL men's semifinal

    MONTREAL – Adil El Makssoud’s 34 points led the UQAM Citadins to an 98-70 win over the Bishop’s Gaiters in a Quebec University Basketball League semifinal tonight in Montreal. The raucous crowd of 527 saw the second-year guard go 13-for-24 from the field, as the Citadins (17-14, 12-10 CIS, 11-5 QUBL) forced 29 Gaiters turnovers to pick up the win.

    Makssoud led all scorers, while Kevin Bitondo, who started in place of the injured Gregory Saint-Amand, recorded a double-double with 20 points and 11 rebounds, while Jules Diagne scored 14 points.

    For Bishop’s (12-17, 10-17 CIS, 7-9 QUBL), Onnex Blackwood (Scarborough, Ont.) led with 19 points, while Hermon Tesfaghebriel (Coquitlam, B.C.) closed out his university career with 15 points. Damon Thomas-Anderson (Verdun, Que.) scored 11 points in what was also his final university game. Tesfaghebriel and Tim Hunter (Baie d’Urfé, Que.) led the Gaiters with seven rebounds each.     Onnex Blackwood named QUBL First Team All-Star

    LENNOXVILLE – Rookie guard Onnex Blackwood (Scarborough, Ont.) of the Bishop's Gaiters has been named a Quebec University Basketball League First Team All-Star, as well as a member of the league's All-Rookie Team. The league office in Montreal made the announcement today. Blackwood becomes the first rookie to be named a QUBL First Team All-Star since Laval's Jean-François Beaulieu Maheux was named a First Team All-Star and Rookie of the Year in 2007.

    Blackwood, 18, quickly established himself as one of the elite players in the Quebec University Basketball League, leading the Gaiters to their first playoff berth in four years. He made an immediate impact on the Gaiters' lineup, scoring a team-high 14 points in his first-ever university game: October 16 at Carleton - then ranked No. 1, and the the defending national champions.

    "You don't expect a true freshman to come in and lead your team in scoring and rebounding," said Gaiters' Head Coach Rod Gilpin. "“He plays with energy and competes in every game. He took advantage of the opportunity he was given, and we are thrilled with his development this year. He is very deserving of this honour, and more."  (More...)

    Gaiters fightback falls short in 68-56 loss at No. 8 Laval

    QUEBEC CITY – The Bishop’s Gaiters came back from a ten-point first quarter deficit, and led late in the third quarter, before finally succumbing 68-56 to the No. 8-ranked Laval Rouge et Or in a Quebec University Basketball League semifinal tonight at the PEPS Gymnasium. The game was tied 52-52 with 5:00 to go before Laval broke it open with an 8-2 run, punctuated by an Elyse Jobin three-pointer with 31 seconds left.     ATHLETE OF THE WEEK:

    The Bishop's Gaiters Athletes of the Week are Onnex Blackwood of the Men's Basketball team and Mélanie Ouellet-Godcharles of the Women's Basketball team.

    Blackwood had the best weekend of his career, scoring 49 points over two games, as the Gaiters split with the league's top two teams. In Friday's win over UQAM, he led the Gaiters with 20 points on 6-for-11 shooting and 7-for-8 from the free-throw line. On Saturday at Laval, he broke out for a career-high 29 points, the highest by a Gaiter this season, as made 11 field goals, and went 7-for-11 from the free-throw line. He also averaged five rebounds and three assists in the two games.

    Ouellet-Godcharles was the Gaiters' leading scorer in both games last weekend, scoring 31 points over the two games. On Friday, she scored a game-high 16 points, including two three-pointers, as the Gaiters downed UQAM 63-53. She also made six rebounds, three assists and had three steals. On Saturday, she was the only Gaiter in double digits, with 15 points, including three 3-pointers.

    HONOUR ROLL:

    • Oraine Green, Men's Basketball - Scored a career-high 25 points on Saturday night

    LENNOXVILLE – Two members of the Bishop's Gaiters Women's Basketball team have been honoured by the Quebec University Basketball League in its annual awards. The two Gaiter honourees are Katy Germain (Val d'Or, Que.), who was named to the league's First All-Star Team for the second straight year, while Bethan Chalke (North Vancouver, B.C.) was named to the league All-Rookie team.

    Germain, a fourth-year 5'8" swingman, earned her second straight All-Star nod. The Education student finished fifth in the league with an average of 12.1 points per game, third in three-pointers per game (1.8) and seventh in three-point shooting percentage (0.300). Defensively, she is third in the league with 1.8 steals per game, and led the Gaiters with 4.3 rebounds per game. Her season was highlighted by a 22-point, six-rebound performance at McGill on January 6, and a 20-point, six-rebound game at Concordia on January 22.

    Chalke, a 5' 11" forward, averaged 4.8 points and 3.1 rebounds in 16 games this year. The graduate of Handsworth Secondary School led the Gaiters' rookies with an average of 14.4 minutes per game. She finished with a 0.439 field goal percentage, and made three blocks and six steals. She scored a season-high 12 points against Laval on November 21, and led the Gaiters with seven rebounds in last Friday's 63-53 win over the UQAM Citadins.

    The Gaiters (12-13, 12-13 CIS, 6-10 QUBL) will visit the No. 7-ranked Laval Rouge et Or on Wednesday night in a QUBL semifinal. Tipoff at the PEPS gymnasium is set for 7 p.m.

    Career-high by Blackwood goes for naught in Gaiters' 90-83 loss at Laval

    QUEBEC CITY – A three-pointer with 13.5 seconds left by Elyse Jobin broke a 53-53 tie, giving the No. 7-ranked Laval Rouge et Or a 56-53 Quebec University Basketball League victory over the Bishop’s Gaiters tonight at the PEPS gymnasium. Jobin finished with a team-high 14 points, including a trio of three-pointers. With the win, Laval finishes the regular season with a 13-3 record (19-7 overall, 19-5 vs. CIS). The Gaiters trailed by as many as 19 points in the third quarter, but used a stifling defence to chip away at the lead, before finally taking the lead early in the fourth quarter.     ATHLETE OF THE WEEK:

    The Bishop's Gaiters Athletes of the Week are Hermon Tesfaghebriel of the Men's Basketball team and Marie-Ève Lemoine of the Women's Basketball team.

    Tesfaghebriel led the Gaiters team to their first playoff berth in four years last weekend, averaging 16.5 points and 7.5 rebounds over the two games. On Saturday, he scored 12 points, grabbed six rebounds and made a career-high six assists as the Gaiters scored an 86-74 victory over the McGill Redmen. On Saturday, he broke out 23 points, tying his season high, including 9-for-10 from the free throw line, as the Gaiters downed Concordia 73-67. He finished with nine rebounds, one short of what would have been his third double-double of the season, and made three steals and two blocks, both tying his season high.

    Lemoine led the Gaiters 24 points and seven assists over the Gaiters' two games last weekend. On Friday, Lemoine scored 12 points and made a career-high five assists, as the Gaiters downed McGill 64-54. She went 4-for-8 shooting, including 2-for-3 from three-point range. On Saturday, she again scored 12 points, her third double-digit game in the past four, on 6-for-13 shooting as the Gaiters fell 68-57 to Concordia. She grabbed a team-high five defensive rebounds, and added a pair of assists.

The raucous Winter Homecoming crowd of 1,115 saw the Gaiters clinch their first trip to the postseason since 2005-06.     LENNOXVILLE – The Concordia Stingers kept their playoff hopes alive as they came from behind to score a 68-57 victory over the host Bishop’s Gaiters in Quebec University Basketball League action tonight. The Gaiters led by as many as eight points, and 31-30 at halftime, but they surrendered the lead late in the second quarter, and could not get it back.     ATHLETE OF THE WEEK:

    The Bishop's Gaiters Athletes of the Week are Tim Hunter of the Men's Basketball team and Annick Stephanny Charles of the Women's Basketball team.

    Hunter put in a pair of strong performances in the Gaiters' two losses last weekend. On Friday, he led the Gaiters with 15 points on 6-for-10 shooting, and added two assists, three rebounds and two steals. On Saturday, he made a career-high eight assists and a season-high nine rebounds in the Gaiters' 74-58 loss to McGill.

    Charles moved into the starting point guard role last weekend, and scored over double digits in both games. On Friday night, she scored 14 points, and made four steals, both team highs. On Saturday, she followed that up with a ten-point, five-rebound and four-assist performance.


    Difficult third quarter sinks Gaiters in 74-58 men’s basketball loss to Laval

    LENNOXVILLE – A difficult third quarter proved to be the difference as the Bishop’s Gaiters fell 74-58 to the Laval Rouge et Or in Quebec University Basketball League action today at the Mitchell Gym. The Gaiters were outscored 22-5 in the period, as Laval turned a 34-27 halftime lead into a 54-32 bulge. The Gaiters made only two field goals in the period, as they went over four minutes without scoring.With the loss, the Gaiters fall to 4-8 in league play (9-15 overall, 7-15 CIS), and remain tied for fourth in the QUBL with idle Concordia.     MONTREAL - Adil El Makssoud’s 19 points led the UQAM Citadins to a 79-59 win over the Bishop’s Gaiters in Quebec University Basketball League men’s action tonight at the UQAM Sports Centre. The Citadins broke the game open with a 14-2 run to end the first quarter, as they cruised to the victory. The Gaiters’ loss, their third straight, drops them to 4-7 in league play (9-14 overall, 7-14 CIS), and leaves them tied for fourth place with idle Concordia.     ATHLETES OF THE WEEK:

    The Bishop's Gaiters Athletes of the Week are Emilee Walker of the Women's Hockey team and Tim Hunter of the Men's Basketball team

    Walker led the Polar Bears for the second straight week. On Friday night, she scored the game-winner as the Bears picked up a come-from-behind 3-1 win over the CV Alumnae at the W.B. Scott Arena.

    Hunter led the Gaiters in all five major offensive categories on Saturday night against Laval. He scored 16 points, grabbed seven rebounds, made six assists, three steals and blocked a shot in the Gaiters' 78-71 loss. The 16 points and seven rebounds were a season high for Hunter. On Friday, he recorded a game-high four assists and a team-high two steals.

    QUEBEC CITY – The Bishop’s Gaiters suffered their second straight loss tonight, a 73-61 defeat at the hands of the No. 6-ranked Laval Rouge et Or in Quebec City. Laval (15-5 ,15-4 CIS, 8-1 QUBL) used a balanced attack, with four players scoring in double-digits, as they led for all but 90 seconds of the game. (More...)

    LENNOXVILLE –Onnex Blackwood’s (Scarborough, Ont.) third straight 20-point game went for naught as the Gaiters fell 81-78 to the McGill Redmen in Quebec University Basketball League men’s action tonight at the Mitchell Gym. The rookie guard shot 9-for-13 from the field, and finished with a team-high 20 points, but it was not enough to offset McGill’s strong outside shooting. With the win, the Redmen improve to 5-5 in league play (9-14 overall, 9-13 CIS), while the Gaiters fall to 4-5 in the league (9-12 overall, 7-12 CIS). (More...)

    LENNOXVILLE – A double-double by Anneth Him-Lazarenko led the McGill Martlets to a 57-51 win over the Bishop’s Gaiters in Quebec University Basketball League women’s action tonight at the Mitchell Gym. The second-year forward led all scorers with 16 points and 11 rebounds as the Martlets held off a pair of second-half charges by the Gaiters. The Martlets improve to 4-6 in the QUBL (9-10 overall), putting them in a tie for third in the QUBL with the Gaiters, who fall to 4-5 (10-8 overall). (More...)

    ATHLETES OF THE WEEK:

    The Bishop's Gaiters Athletes of the Week are Katy Germain of the Women's Basketball team and Onnex Blackwood of the Men's Basketball team

    Blackwood led the Gaiters to a 74-61 win over the Concordia Stingers on Friday night with his third double-double of the season. Blackwood scored a career-high 24 points and grabbed 11 rebounds as the Gaiters ran their winning streak to three games. He shot 9-for-15 from the field in scoring 15 of the Gaiters’ 32 first-half points. Blackwood, a true freshman from Mother Theresa Catholic Secondary School, has moved into second place in the QUBL scoring list with an average of 15.9 points per game.

    Germain, a fourth-year forward, scored 20 points, including 15 in the second half, as the Gaiters came from behind to defeat the Concordia Stingers 63-52 on Friday night. The Val d’Or, Que. native keyed the Gaiters’ comeback from a 28-21 halftime deficit with three second-half three pointers. Germain made a season-high eight field goals, and also tied for the team lead with a season-high six rebounds. She is now third in the QUBL scoring standings with an average of 12.8 points per game.

    MONTREAL – A pair of big second-half performances by Katy Germain (Val d’Or, Que.) and Mélanie Ouellet-Godcharles (Gatineau, Que.) keyed the Bishop’s Gaiters to a 63-52 come-from-behind victory over the Concordia Stingers in Quebec University Basketball League women’s action tonight in Montreal. Germain finished with 20 points, 15 in the second half, while Ouellet-Godcharles scored 14 of her 18 points in the second half as the Gaiters rebounded from a 28-21 halftime deficit.     The Bishop's Gaiters Athletes of the Week are Mélanie Ouellet-Godcharles of the Women's Basketball team and Onnex Blackwood of the Men's Basketball team

    Ouellet-Godcharles led the Gaiters with 15 points and four rebounds in Friday's 61-53 loss to the UQAM Citadins. She went 5-for-10 from the field, including a team-high three three-pointers, and added four rebounds, three assists and three steals.

    Blackwood led the Gaiters with 20 points and four steals as they downed the UQAM Citadins 76-69 in overtime on Friday night. Blackwood was 7-for-13 from the field, and his layup forced overtime, capping a Gaiters' comeback from nine points down.

    LENNOXVILLE – Onnex Blackwood's 20 points led the Gaiters as they came from behind to score a 76-69 (OT) victory over the UQAM Citadins. Blackwood forced overtime as his layup made the score 61-61, capping a Gaiters comeback from nine points down in the fourth quarter, and he made three key free throws late in the extra period to ice the game.

    Benoit Groulx named Gaiters’ Offensive Coordinator

    LENNOXVILLE – Bishop’s Gaiters Head Football Coach Leroy Blugh announced today that Benoit Groulx has been named the team’s new Offensive Coordinator.

    Groulx, 24, recently completed five seasons as a quarterback with the Laval Rouge et Or, winning the Vanier Cup in 2006 and 2008, and was one of the most decorated players in QUFL history. He won the Hec Crighton Trophy in 2008 as the CIS’ most valuable player, and is a three-time winner of the Jeff Russel Award as the QUFL’s Player of the Year. He was a named a First Team All-Canadian in 2008.
