This June, Bishop’s University welcomes the inaugural Stephen A. Jarislowsky Scholars-in Residence to campus

Through the generosity of The Jarislowsky Foundation, this Scholars-in-Residence program invites 1 – 2 internationally recognized scholars to Bishop’s University for one month every year to work with the university community and alongside Dr. Jessica Riddell (the Stephen A. Jarislowsky Chair for Undergraduate Teaching Excellence) to enhance teaching and learning in higher education. The visiting scholars are expected to run workshops for faculty, team-teach a course, and work on a research project that enhances undergraduate teaching excellence with impact across Canada and around the world.

This June, Bishop’s University welcomes the first ever Jarislowsky Scholars-in Residence:

  • Dr. Lisa Dickson, Associate Professor, Early Modern Literature, Department of English, UNBC, 3M National Teaching Fellow
  • Dr. Shannon Murray, Professor, Early Modern Literature, Department of English, UPEI, 3M National Teaching Fellow

Building a culture of teaching excellence and leadership

Dr. Dickson, Dr. Murray, and Dr. Riddell are all 3M National Teaching Fellows, which means they have been recognized with Canada’s highest honour for teaching, learning, and educational leadership in higher education. Since 1986, ten scholars from across Canada are honoured every year. Dr. Dickson, Dr. Murray, and Dr. Riddell are the only 3M National Teaching Fellows who are also disciplinary experts in Early Modern Literature (in the 33 year history of the Fellowship). They have presented together at several internationally recognized conferences, facilitated a number of workshops, and are working on a book project on teaching Shakespeare in the 21st Century.

Teaching and Leading

Over the course of this residency, Drs. Dickson, Murray, and Riddell will work on their book (expected for release in Spring 2019 with University of Toronto Press), deliver workshops for faculty, present two sessions at STLHE 2018, and team teach ENG225 Shakesperience, a course that takes students to Stratford Ontario for a week-long immersive theatre experience June 9 – 16, 2018.
