“Science Wars: A Lack of Faith in Science”: call for papers

Conference featuring keynote speaker Dr. Fuyuki Kurasawa of York University

The Bishop’s Sociology Department will be hosting a conference titled “Science Wars: A Lack of Faith in Science”, to explore and reflect on the causes and consequences of perceived increasing distrust in scientific expertise in today’s society.

“Distrust in scientific expertise appears to be gaining ground within society leading to movements and trends such as climate-change denial, anti-vaccination campaigns, and “fake news” on one hand, while many in the scientific community itself have long decried the abuse and misuse of factual knowledge in the name of science,” explains Dr. Steven Cole, of Bishop’s University’s Department of Sociology and convener of the conference.

The Bishop’s Sociology Department is issuing a call for papers for the “Science Wars: A Lack of Faith in Science” conference which will take place from October 19 to 21, 2018, during which participants will share insights about the perceived loss of faith in science, notably with Dr. Fuyuki Kurasawa, the York Research Chair in Global Digital Citizenship at the Department of Sociology of York University as keynote speaker.

Presenters from any academic discipline and any degree standing are encouraged to submit papers on their perspective on this topic. Abstracts no longer than 150 words, along with presentation titles and keywords may be submitted before Friday, September 21, 2018 by email at sociologynow@ubishops.ca, additional information can be found on facebook and twitter.
