Scholar Strike: to engage in concrete action to support justice and equity for Black, Indigenous and Communities of Colour

Dear academic colleagues at Bishop’s,

Many of you are aware that there is a Scholar Strike organized for September 9 and 10. As the website indicates, Scholar Strike is a labour action/teach-in/social justice advocacy in which faculty, staff and students engage in concrete action to support justice and equity for Black, Indigenous and Communities of Colour around the globe.

The Scholar Strike organizers encourage us all to engage in some of the wide array of activities listed on the program beyond the strike itself such as amplifying the message on social media to using the organization’s digital public teach-ins during class time. See detailed program here: https://scholarstrikecanada.ca/quick-program-overview/.

We believe that there are many ways to integrate a focus on anti-racist and anti-discriminatory education in all our academic activities and support you in doing so today, tomorrow and throughout the academic year. The Scholar Strike website includes a rich list of useful resources: https://scholarstrikecanada.ca/resources/.

Bishop’s University has much to do and learn as we move forward in increasing the diversity of our community. We all have a responsibility to do our part. The dialogue and concrete actions must and will continue throughout the year.

All the best for a productive, supportive and respectful year.
