A

THE ARCHES
The front entrance of the school that gives entrance to the quad.

B

BLEEDPURPLE
A phrase used to explain the full impact of our school spirit and Gaiter pride.

BOG
A British term referring to a ‘toilet’. Bogs are shared washrooms between 2 or 3 residents. Bogs are located in the Abbott, Munster and Kuehner buildings.

BOGMATE
Much like a roommate, a bogmate shares a washroom that is between two dorm rooms in residence.

C

CARREFOUR
Short for the Carrefour de l’Estrie, this is the largest shopping center in the Sherbrooke region and only minutes from campus by bus.

CONVOCATION
Our university graduation.

COULTER FIELD
Bishop’s university artificial field use for football, lacrosse, soccer and rugby games.

D

DEWHURST DINING HALL (DEWIES)
Our main on campus dining hall.

DOOLITTLES
Our student-run on-campus convenience store.

E

EWP
English writing proficiency is a two hour essay written by all Bishop’s student that must be passed before graduation.

G

THE GAIT
Our on campus bar, run by the Student Representative Council (SRC).

GAITERS
This is the name of our varsity athletic teams.

H

HOMECOMING
Homecoming occurs over a weekend early in the school year and centres around sporting events and bringing together past and present students.

L

LENNOXVILLE
The English borough of Sherbrooke where Bishop’s University is situated.

THE LIGHTS
The only traffic lights in Lennoxville, situated at the intersection of College and Queen streets.

THE GOLDEN LION PUB/Le LION D’OR (LION)
Our local Lennoxville pub know for Acoustic Tuesday and Wings night on Wednesday.

MACK
Short for Mackinnon Hall, one of the traditional-style residence buildings.

THE MASSAWIPPI
The river that runs through and around the Lennoxville area.

N

NEWSIDE
A reference to the Abbott, Munster and Kuehner residence buildings, on the ‘newer’ side of campus.

NOPO
A reference to Norton and Pollack residence buildings, which are located on the south side of the Quad adjacent to the Bassett Memorial Library and Johnson Buildings.

O

O WEEK
Orientation week is the first week of activities for incoming students at Bishop’s. Put on by the SRC, O week includes concerts, academic tours and orientation sessions.

P

PLEX (John H. Price Sports Centre)
Our campus sport and recreation center, it includes two gymnasiums, ice rink, pool, fitness and cardio rooms and other activity rooms.

PRINCIPAL
Most universities have a president but Bishop’s still use this British title for the head of the university.

PORTER’S OFFICE
Our on campus mailing office, includes internal mail and external mail services.

Q

THE QUAD
A grassy area at the heart of Bishop’s campus framed by the buildings of McGreer, Johnson, the library, Bandeen and Nopo.  Also the name of the annual yearbook.

R

RAISE A TOAST
The name and opening line to our school song.

READING WEEK
A week in mid-February given to students to complete assignments and study for mid-term exams.  There are no classes during this week.

RESIDENT ASSISTANT (RA)
Resident Assistants are upper-year students who live on a floor/section, and are there to make sure all residents can enjoy their time in residence.

SRC
The student representative council is our nonprofit student run government.

SUB (STUDENT UNION BUILDING)
Here you will find the office of the Student Representative Council, the mail room, the Gaiter Grill (restaurant), the campus bookstore, and Doolittle’s (Convenience Store).

W

WINTERFEST
A weekend of festivities during the winter semester that includes a day trip to Jay Peak, a rail-jam, hockey in the quad and concerts.
