NEW PROGRAM ON CLIMATE CHANGE AT BISHOP’S UNIVERSITY AND PARTNERSHIP WITH UNIVERSITÉ DE SHERBROOKE

First of its kind in Québec

Bishop’s University is offering a new graduate-level micro-program on climate change, the first English-language program of its kind in Québec. Starting in Winter 2016, the new program will offer instruction from leading experts on the science of climate change, its impacts, and strategies for its mitigation.

The program was developed in conjunction with the Centre universitaire de formation en environnement et développement durable (CUFE) at the Université de Sherbrooke. CUFE offers a course-based maîtrise en environnement (M. Env) degree with a number of different streams. The Bishop’s micro-program is now a stream in the M.Env program. M.Env students would complete the Micro-Program at Bishop’s (in English) and the credits will count toward their degree at the Université de Sherbrooke. Students at both schools can also choose to enrol in the micro-program only.

‘‘I’m very pleased that we can offer this unique program at Bishop’s and that we can welcome students from Université de Sherbrooke,’’ says Dr. Miles Turnbull, Vice-Principal Academic. ‘‘Once again, Bishop’s and Université de Sherbrooke are setting the example of how two universities can work together to offer relevant academic programs that tackle modern issues like climate change.’’

Dr. Matthew Peros, Associate Professor in the Department of Environmental Studies & Geography at Bishop’s and Canada Research Chair in Climate and Environmental Change, is one of the leading experts in the program. ‘‘The courses will consist of a combination of seminars, lectures, fieldtrips, and laboratory instruction. The program will provide students with a solid understanding of both the scientific and non-scientific aspects of climate change and thus will be highly applicable to a range of career options.’’

He adds: ‘‘Université de Sherbrooke students who enrol in this program will have the chance to improve their English skills, since the program will be taught in English.’’

Denyse Rémillard, head director of the CUFE, says: ‘‘The master’s program in environmental studies enjoys a good reputation in Quebec’s environmental sector. This new partnership with Bishop’s gives students the chance to explore the subject of climate change while perfecting their skills in English.’’

Graduates will be well positioned to compete for jobs in both government and the private sector. The program could also be used as a springboard for further study, whether it involves graduate school in a climate or environment-related field, or a professional degree such as law school or an MBA.

The deadline for applications for the winter 2016 semester is Friday, November 13, 2015.
