Stephanie Janeiro learns the foundations of success in England

The B.E.S.T. Projects Fund is a unique opportunity for Bishop’s students to explore a passion or potential career path outside of the classroom. For Stephanie Janeiro, the opportunity came at a time when she began taking interest in something she knew almost nothing about: architecture.

The Liberal Arts and Fine Arts student from Montreal has been accepted into a 3-week program at the University of the Arts in London, England, after applying for a B.E.S.T. grant.

“I’m hoping to gain some basic experience on what it’s like to do architectural drawings,” the 22-year-old explains. “My goal is to learn some basic techniques and concepts that professionals use for architectural drawing and design, and to gain insight on what schools are looking for in a portfolio application for a master’s degree in architecture.”

Stephanie dreams of designing industrial and cultural spaces, but is hoping that the experience in England will confirm her passion. “This opportunity will give me a glimpse of what the architectural field is like. It means getting a chance to being accepted at a university for my master’s in architecture. I’d like to immerse myself to see if I like it,” she says.

The focused student is looking forward to her summer program to see how it will complement her classroom experience. “I think we learn best through experiential learning because it’s one of the ways we process information the best,” she says. “By immersing ourselves in these environments, we learn more about ourselves and the environment in question. Most importantly, it’s where our expectations and the reality of the situation are confronted.”

What is B.E.S.T. ?

This story focuses on a recipient of the B.E.S.T. Projects Fund. B.E.S.T. is the premiere experiential learning opportunity at Bishop’s University. In 2010, an anonymous Bishop’s graduate made a gift commitment to establish this opportunity fund at the university. This unique possibility is meant to assist students, determine their career paths and realize their ambitions. It also gives the student the chance to learn outside of the classroom.

The funds are awarded to students whom the Selection Committee believes have the potential for significant achievement and impact once they graduate from Bishop’s. Find out more information about B.E.S.T.
