The Mae Sot Education Project

A unique volunteer opportunity for Bishop’s & Champlain students, working with Burmese refugees and migrants in Mae Sot, Thailand.

The Mae Sot Education Project provides both preparation and support for student volunteers to go to Mae Sot, Thailand for periods of 3 to 6 months in order to immerse themselves in and provide assistance to the Burmese (Myanmar) migrant education community.

Bishop’s students who do internships with the project have the possibility of earning 6 credits by enrolling in a special experiential learning course related to the project.

Project objectives

  • Send student volunteers from Bishop’s University and Champlain College – Lennoxville (Sherbrooke, Quebec, Canada) to help in the teaching of English in schools for migrant and refugee children in and around Mae Sot by animating English learning activities.
  • Provide some financial assistance and classroom materials to partner schools.
  • Develop the understanding, leadership, and skills of the student volunteers.
  • Encourage commitment to international cooperation and human rights in our community in Canada.
  • Try to strengthen the ties of friendship and understanding among youth from Myanmar, Thailand and Canada.
