Alternative grading policy COVID-19 notation

The unprecedented events following the COVID-19 pandemic required the University to review its grading scheme (0-100%). To allow for flexibility and compassion, the University Senate passed motions that provided a pass-fail grading option for the following semesters:

Date of Senate / Semester
March 20, 2020 / Winter 2020
October 23, 2020 / Fall 2020
December 11, 2020 / Winter 2021

Students were given the option to substitute a numerical mark that fulfilled the program requirements (as per the Academic Calendar) to a PASS “P”. Numerical grades below the relevant passing threshold were converted automatically to a FAIL “F”. Pass-fail grades are not included in the calculation of the cumulative average.

Please note that students could not request a numerical score if the entire course had already been designated Pass/Fail.

Fall 2021 and Winter 2022 Semesters

On November 19, 2021 at its 638th meeting of the Senate, the University approved to extend the availability of the Pass/Fail (P/F) option for one course for each of the Fall 2021 and Winter 2022 semesters. No exceptional measures were done for courses below the relevant passing threshold.
