I felt as though I would be able to leave my mark here in many areas and that I’d have opportunities to show what I can do. It also felt like my program wouldn’t completely define me as I’d be able to take classes from other disciplines and develop relationships with people in a variety of areas. I really like to put myself out there and take advantage of opportunities. Like myself, I don’t think that incoming students really know about the opportunities available in university and this is true about Bishop’s as well. You need to get out there and discover. Students need to know that you don’t have to be in your last year to be a Teacher’s Assistant, or to get involved in research, or to assist with the University’s social media student takeovers, or be in a class of mostly upper year students that already know the teachers, or to tutor other students, or to be part of student government and share your opinions and ideas. I didn’t know about all of these things but these are only some of the things I got involved with during my first semester at BU! My world has evolved so much. One of the other things that was surprising to me, and which is something I love, is the freedom in being able to combine courses from a variety of disciplines. This is something that I had never heard of before being here. Bishop’s is different. If you don’t know what you truly want to study or what you want to do after university don’t worry, at Bishop’s you don’t have to choose only one thing, in fact it is encouraged to do more. Here you have the freedom to be yourself (as we say, it’s a place where you can B-U) and take advantage of your new freedoms. Look at the Academic Calendar, look at all the classes you could take regardless of the program you are in, try to learn more, try to talk to BU students, and ASK questions. There are infinite number of possibilities, which is why one would want to come here. Come here to influence society, to change Bishop’s, to change the world, and to be the best version of yourself. At Bishop’s you really can Be yoU.
