J’ai le plaisir de vous annoncer que le Conseil des gouverneurs a accepté ma recommandation de reconduire Miles Turnbull dans ses fonctions de vice-principal académique pour un deuxième mandat de cinq ans à partir du 1 juillet 2019. Il sera également responsable de la recherche.

Je lui suis très reconnaissant pour son dévouement à l’Université. Bishop’s a surmonté plusieurs défis financiers majeurs au cours de son premier mandat. Nous avons néanmoins réalisé des progrès constants dans de nombreux aspects du milieu académique et de la recherche.

“We are deeply committed to ensuring that all students who excel academically are rewarded for their efforts. We are very grateful to Hydro-Québec for this important investment in our students,” said Dr. Miles Turnbull, Vice-Principal Academic at Bishop’s University.

The Hydro-Québec academic excellence scholarships support one of the main goals of Bishop’s University’s Leading the Way Campaign – which concluded in April 2018 and raised $44.5 million on a goal of $30 million – which was to raise funds for scholarships and bursaries. This gift will support Bishop’s in attracting the most promising students to its campus.

Hydro-Québec’s donation of $160,000, delivered in $32,000 increments over five years, allows deserving Bishop’s students to benefit from an annual scholarship of $4,000 to $6,000.

Bishop’s University is pleased to announce that Ethan Pohl, a fourth year undergraduate student majoring in Sociology, has been awarded the prestigious 3M National Student Fellowship.

The 3M National Student Fellowship honours up to ten full-time students at Canadian post-secondary institutions who have demonstrated outstanding leadership in their lives, at their post-secondary institution. These students embrace a vision of education that enhances their academic experience and beyond.

During his time at Bishop’s, Ethan has been the Station Manager at BU Toast Radio and helped design and facilitate ENG454 Podcasting, one of the experiential learning opportunities offered through the English Department. As part of this project he also co-published a peer-reviewed article on student-faculty partnerships and has since presented at international conferences. He has been a valuable contributor to the Maple League Student Advisory Council, and is a wonderful example of a student who has benefitted from a model of education that values collaboration as a fundamental process in building capacities for new ways of thinking, doing, and learning through an individualized approach to undergraduate education. As Dr. Jessica Riddell, his 3M nominator, writes, “Ethan has been a leader on campus throughout his time at Bishop’s, and continues to seek out colleagues and collaborators to broaden his knowledge – but also to help his peers find their voices. Ethan is the ultimate amplifier of student voices, which makes him an ideal 3M fellow. Ethan has always been very open about his own struggles and messy journeys: because he knows how hard it is to find your voice, he has committed himself to helping others find theirs.”

Awardees attend the annual conference of the Society for Teaching and Learning in Higher Education (STLHE) in June, where they will participate in a 3M National Student Fellowship Program retreat and lead the closing plenary. This year STLHE2019 is in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Bishop’s a été avisée par Hydro-Québec d’une interruption de courant planifiée liée aux travaux de construction de l’autoroute 410 le mercredi 27 février 2019, entre midi et 16h. Cette interruption de courant planifiée ne peut malheureusement pas être décalée ou reportée. Si des circonstances imprévues empêchaient Hydro-Québec d’effectuer les travaux le 27 février, l’interruption planifiée serait reportée au lendemain, soit le jeudi 28 février 2019.

Les activités académiques seront maintenues puisque la plupart des locaux du campus sont naturellement éclairés. L’éclairage d’urgence sera activé, mais certaines infrastructures – y compris, entre autres, des salles de bains et des ascenseurs – pourraient être hors-service. Les professeurs peuvent prendre des décisions discrétionnaires à propos de la tenue des cours, mais devront informer leurs étudiants des changements à l’horaire régulier des cours.

Hydro-Québec est confiante que le courant devrait être rétabli avant la tombée de la nuit; cependant, la situation sera suivie et réévaluée sir l’interruption devait sembler se poursuivre au-delà de la tombée du jour. Bishop’s University and the SRC are pleased to share exciting news with you about upcoming changes to the Bishop’s University Bookstore.

Beginning in July 2019, the campus bookstore is changing its model of operation and will become a co-op: owned by you, for you!

A co-op is a not-for-profit organization, for which users may purchase a share and become a member to benefit from lower prices than non-members. The goals of the co-op will be to offer its members the lowest possible prices while remaining financially sustainable, and to provide maximum employment and experiential learning opportunities to Bishop’s students.

Dans le cadre de sa première campagne Mardi je donne, l’Université Bishop’s a amassé un total de 62 926,50 $ le 27 novembre dernier. Ce montant servira à octroyer des bourses aux étudiantes et étudiants dans le besoin.

Après le Vendredi fou et le Cyber lundi, le mouvement Mardi je donne est une occasion de rallier les gens à une cause de leur choix, en faisant un don ou du bénévolat.

Le succès de cette première édition repose entièrement sur la générosité de notre communauté qui croit fermement en la réussite de nos étudiants. Nous sommes très reconnaissants envers nos donateurs qui ont participé à la journée en racontant leur histoire et en partageant notre enthousiasme pour cette campagne de collecte de fonds.

En août 2017, Victoria Meikle a quitté ses fonctions à titre de Secrétaire-générale et Vice-principale, Relations gouvernementales et planification. Au cours de la dernière année, sur une base intérimaire, Trygve Ugland a rempli les fonctions de Vice-principal, Relations gouvernementales et planification et Marie-Josée Dufour celles de Secrétaire-générale.

En juin 2018, le Conseil des Gouverneurs a constitué un comité ad hoc pour la sélection d’un Secrétaire-général et Vice-principal, Relations gouvernementales et planification, conformément aux statuts de l’Université.

Le Comité a unanimement recommandé la nomination de Trygve Ugland à ce poste. Le Sénat et le Conseil des Gouverneurs ont tous deux unanimement entériné la recommandation.
