Sports Studies Research Talk: Concentric Circles: A Sports, Business, and Society Research Agenda

Presented by Dr. Angela Pratt
Abstract: Dr. Angela N. Pratt presents her research agenda, including past work and a look toward the future. Her scholarship spans the areas of sport administration, strategic communication, gender and sport communication, and qualitative research. Dr. Pratt will discuss studies in each of those areas. She will also outline her future plans to explore the following: 1. how the concept of “workplace as family” is strategically implemented in athletics organizations, and 2. the practical and ethical implications of massive and invasive data collection from student athletes. Dr. Pratt holds degrees from the University of Tennessee (Ph.D.), the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (M.A.), and Campbell University (B.A.). She is currently an assistant professor in the Department of Communication at Clemson University (Clemson, SC). Prior to her academic career, Dr. Pratt held a number of positions in the sports industry, including in professional and intercollegiate sport, which have influenced her research agenda.
About the Speaker: Dr. Angela N. Pratt is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Communication at Clemson University (Clemson, SC), and teaches in the Sports Communication major. She came to Clemson from Bradley University (Peoria, IL), where she was an Assistant Professor of Communication for five years, teaching in the Sports Communication major. Pratt received her doctorate from the College of Communication and Information at the University of Tennessee (Knoxville, TN). She holds an M.A. from the School of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and a B.A. from Campbell University (Buies Creek, NC). Pratt has extensive professional experience in sports communication, including posts as Sports Sales Manager for the Greater Raleigh (NC) Convention & Visitors Bureau, Assistant Director of Marketing for the University of Virginia Department of Athletics (Charlottesville, VA), Public Relations Director for the Raleigh (NC) Capital Express (A-League Pro Soccer), and Media Relations Intern for the Charlotte (NC) Hornets (National Basketball Association). She also served on Bradley University’s Intercollegiate Athletics Committee and the Bradley University Athletics Gender Equity Committee.
