Dynamic second edition of Bishop’s Forum concludes

Young English-speaking Quebecers tackle issues and find their voice

At the conclusion of a week of panel discussions, group work sessions, and debates, participants in the second edition of the Bishop’s Forum put their newly-developed and enhanced skills for public advocacy to the test in mock parliamentary commissions, during which they put forward their proposals on topics such as access to medication, neo-natal care, and northern development, among others.

“The Bishop’s Forum has made me aware of how youth really have the power to bring change. It has provided us with tools and opportunities to make that change, even if it seems intimidating,” said Bishop’s Forum participant Sierra Tartaglia, from Pointe-Claire.

“This week has been very educational, and I was happy to see real people connected to Nunavik and others calling for public action to help our community,” said Bishop’s Forum participant Sevim Ilgun, from Quaqtaq.

Over 50 participants between the ages of 18 and 26 hailing from all corners of Quebec, from Nunavik to the Eastern Townships, and from the Outaouais to the Gaspé discussed the issues that matter for them. They took in the advice from prominent thought leaders in Quebec society to learn about media, social issues, civic engagement, culture, politics and much more.

With support from the Government of Québec’s Stratégie d’action jeunesse 2016-2021, participants took part in this week-long immersive experiential learning opportunity at no cost.

“What was very encouraging to hear throughout the discussions is how much these young leaders love Quebec, and how motivated they are to have their say in shaping the society in which they live. Through the Bishop’s Forum, we hope to help them develop the tools they need to take their place as active and engaged members of Quebec society,” said Bishop’s University Principal and Vice-Chancellor Michael Goldbloom, C.M.

“In addition to its vast content offering of renowned speakers, informative panels and lively debates, the Bishop’s Forum is an excellent venue for young English-speaking Quebecers to network and meet other socially engaged youths from different horizons. It also gives them pause to reflect on what they have in common beyond the specific issues they wish to exert influence about,” said Bishop’s Forum Director Russell Copeman.

Bishop’s University and its partners are proud to have hosted the second edition of this important forum whose appeal and reputation continue to grow, and look forward to hosting the third edition of the Bishop’s Forum in 2019.
