Bishop’s University has unveiled an impressive lineup of speakers for the Donald Lecture Series.

“The Donald Lecture Series is emblematic of Bishop’s commitment to academic excellence,” says Bishop’s University Principal and Vice-Chancellor Michael Goldbloom C.M. “The lectures provide a stimulating intellectual experience for our students, for the Eastern Townships community and for our alumni who view them online.”

David Hogg will launch the Series on Tuesday, October 2, 2018. Mr. Hogg is a co-founder of the March for our Lives movement, a youth led gun violence prevention movement that organized one of the largest mass mobilizations in the history of the U.S.A. on March 24, 2018, in the wake of the school shooting that took place on February 14, 2018 in Parkland, Florida.

On Wednesday, November 14, 2018, the Donald Lecture Series will host former Chief Justice of Canada the Rt. Hon. Beverley McLachlin P.C. After a distinguished legal career as a judge in British Columbia’s courts as well as in her role as the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Canada, Justice McLachlin retired on December 15, 2017, and has since published an acclaimed first novel: “Full Disclosure.”

Prized journalist, human rights activist and Officer of the Order of Canada Sally Armstrong, a former member of the UN’s International Women’s Commission and four-time recipient of the Amnesty International Canada media award, will be the Donald Lecture speaker on Friday, February 8, 2019.

Harley Finkelstein, Chief Operating Officer of Shopify and one of the “Dragons” of CBC Televisions “Next Gen Den” will round out the speakers’ roster for this season on Wednesday, March 27, 2019.

The Donald Lecture Series is made possible by the generous support of Bishop’s alumnus John Donald ’60, DCL ’12, and brings speakers of national and international renown to Bishop’s to provide insight, provoke thought and stimulate debate on the most compelling issues and events in the world today.

Donald Lecture Series speakers are selected from nominations submitted by Bishop’s students, faculty, staff and community members, who are also represented on the Advisory Committee which provides recommendations to the Principal.

Previous speakers have included the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean, General Roméo Dallaire, Reverend Jesse Jackson, Green Party Leader Elizabeth May, Astronaut Christopher Hadfield, Writer Naomi Klein, New York Columnist Maureen Dowd, Photographer Edward Burtynsky, “the Man in Motion” Rick Hansen and Edward Snowden.

The Donald Lecture Series conferences are free, non-ticketed public events, which take place at the Centennial Theatre at Bishop’s. All conferences begin at 7:00 p.m. Parking is free on Bishop’s campus on Donald Lecture Series evenings.
