Chloé Soucy awarded 3M National Student Fellowship

Bishop’s University is pleased to announce that Chloé Soucy, a 4th year undergraduate student majoring in English and Education, has been awarded the prestigious 3M National Student Fellowship.

The 3M National Student Fellowship honours up to ten full-time students at Canadian post-secondary institutions who have demonstrated outstanding leadership in their lives, at their post-secondary institution. These students embrace a vision of education that enhances their academic experience and beyond. This year there were 129 applications from students at universities and colleges across Canada.

During her time at Bishop’s, Chloé founded Bishop’s Bees, a vibrant and dynamic initiative that produces sustainable honey – with the focus on community outreach, sustainable environmental practices, outdoor education, and supports urban/local beekeeping. She is also the founder of the Bishop’s University Outdoor Club, the 2017 – 2018 Tomlinson Intern for the English Department, the Coordinator of an international undergraduate conference for humanities students (QUEUC), and the Chair of the English Department Student Advisory Council. As Dr. Jessica Riddell, her 3M nominator, writes, “One thread that runs through all Chloé’s work is a deep sense of integrity and of empowering others to be advocates and allies and champions. When I solicited letters of support for Chloe’s application, the words that kept recurring were “joy” and “community” and “integrity”. Her leadership style has been described as graceful, understated, and consistent. She empowers others to take flight and soar.”

Awardees attend the annual conference of the Society for Teaching and Learning in Higher Education (STLHE) in June, where they will participate in a 3M National Student Fellowship Program retreat and lead the closing plenary. This year Bishop’s University is co-hosting STLHE2018 with the Université de Sherbrooke.

At Bishop’s, we are small and yet mighty in our aspirations to be the institution of choice for outstanding young people seeking academic excellence and a comprehensive undergraduate experience. We believe that student learning and strong student-faculty partnerships are at the heart of higher education, and we are very proud of Chloé as a model of educational leadership, academic rigor, research, and creative activity.
