Cello at the Crossroads with Yegor Dyachkov and Jean Saulnier to open Centennial Music Series

The Music Series opens with a virtuosic duet between cellist Yegor Dyachkov and pianist Jean Saulnier on Sunday, October 18th at 3 pm at Centennial Theatre located on the campus of Bishop’s University. A rich and wide ranging repertoire awaits, namely: R. Schumann  / Adagio & Allegro Op. 70; B. Martinu  / Ariette  in ragtime/jazz style; N. Kapustin  / Two jazz pieces: Nearly Waltz, Burlesque; B. Martinu  / Arabesque in tango style; A. Piazzolla  / Le grand tango;  Ch. Hatzis  / Atonement (written for Y. Dyachkov) D. Shostakovich  / Sonata Op. 40.

Listen to Atonement Ch. Hatzis

The Dyachkov-Saulnier duo enjoys offering engaging and original recitals that are sure to move and energize. This program combines thoughtful musical substance and pleasure. Schumann’s heartfelt Adagio and festive Allegro are followed by two short pieces by Martinu. They provide an artful conduit between classical and popular traditions, introducing listeners to the world of Kapustin’s jazz and Piazzolla’s tango.  Atonement by the internationally-renowned Canadian composer Christos Hatzis impressively fuses tango, jazz elements and… a Jewish theme! Profound emotion and sarcastic wit permeate expansive passages of Shostakovich’s Sonata, a great masterpiece of the chamber music repertoire. Its Largo is arguably one of the most poignant lyrical movements by the composer.
