BISHOP’S UNIVERSITY WINS PRESTIGIOUS HONOURS IN ENTREPRENEURSHIP AT ANNUAL CONCOURS QUÉBÉCOIS EN ENTREPRENEURIAT

A student from Bishop’s University’s Williams School of Business has received provincial recognition this month, putting once again the university’s culture of business excellence in the spotlight.

Jay (Zhenyi) Chen, a 3rd year Entrepreneurship student from Fuzhou, China, won the ‘‘University – individual and small group’’ category at the 17th Annual Québec Entrepreneurship Contest in Québec City last week with his project ApplyEdu, an online tool that aims to revolutionize the international university enrolment industry. His project won the local and regional levels of competition in order to get to the finals against all other Quebec regions.

Mr. Chen received extensive support and coaching for his project from the Dobson-Lagassé Entrepreneurship Centre, located on campus. This significant achievement underlines the advantage for Bishop’s students of having an Entrepreneurship Centre so highly connected to the local and regional business community.

‘‘I am very proud of Jay,’’ says Dr. Francine Turmel, Dean of the Williams School of Business. ‘‘He overcame many obstacles to study in Canada, and now he has successfully leveraged his experience into a viable business opportunity to help others who face a similar situation. We’re happy that the Centre continues to play a key role in supporting Bishop’s students in their entrepreneurial endeavours.’’

The Québec Entrepreneurship Contest is the most prestigious provincial contest where the education and business communities join forces in promoting, developing and recognizing entrepreneurship across Québec.

Through the Student Entrepreneurship division, the Contest calls on students from elementary school to university who have carried out projects that have demonstrated their entrepreneurial skills during the school year. The Contest’s Business Creation division is aimed at Quebecers who are at least 18 years old and are planning to set up a business in Quebec.
