BISHOP’S UNIVERSITY PARTNERS WITH CANADIAN BLOOD SERVICES AND HÉMA-QUÉBEC FOR #BLEEDPURPLE CAMPAIGN

As part of its 2015-16 student recruitment campaign, Bishop’s University is launching #BleedPurple, a distinctive awareness effort that unites Canadian Blood Services, Héma-Québec, and Bishop’s under one common cause: saving lives.

Beginning on September 17, Bishop’s students, staff, faculty and alumni across Canada will be answering the call of many Canadians in need by participating in various blood drives on and off campus.

The partnership between Bishop’s, Héma-Québec and Canadian Blood Services takes the premise of being part of a community and being socially aware, and links it with our student recruitment campaign. Always on the lookout for young women and men to become the next generation of Gaiters, Bishop’s strives to attract students who will build a better community and strive to be better global citizens.

Giving blood only takes about an hour and Canada needs at least 85,000 new blood donors this year to meet demand. The public is invited to participate in the upcoming blood drives and leave their purple mark:

Scheduled blood drives

Thursday, September 17, 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.
Canadian Blood Services Donor Clinic, 67 College Street, Toronto (Bay and College)
Organized by Canadian Blood Services

Monday, November 16, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
John H. Price Sports and Recreation Centre, 2600 College Street, Sherbrooke (Bishop’s University campus)
Organized by Héma-Québec and Bishop’s University Students’ Representative Council

We invite everyone to contact their nearest blood donor clinic to book an appointment then dress in purple on your big day and post your photo tagging @HemaQuebec, @ItsInYouToGive and @UBishops.

The #BleedPurple campaign also encourages individuals to donate stem cells though these same organizations. Stem cell transplants are used to treat some 80 diseases and disorders. At any given time, close to 1,000 Canadians are waiting for a stem cell match. Fewer than 25 percent are able to find a match within their own families – meaning 75% rely on the generosity of volunteer donors.

Héma-Québec’s Stem Cell Registry and Canadian Blood Services’ OneMatch Stem Cell and Marrow Network recruits healthy, committed volunteers who are willing to be a match for non-relative patients. With more younger, ethnically diverse males registering with the Stem Cell Registry and OneMatch, we can better meet patients’ needs and increase the likelihood of successful transplants.

If you are between 17 and 35 years of age (18-35 years of age in Quebec), in good general health and willing to donate to any patient in need, you could be the one match to save a life. Register at www.hema-quebec.qc.ca/cellules-souches/index.en.html or www.blood.ca/stem-cells.
