Home > Academic Programs > School of Education > English Exam for Teacher Certification (EETC)

In Quebec it is required that all students in teacher education programs demonstrate their proficiency in the language of instruction by writing (and passing) the English Exam for Teacher Certification (EETC). The examination is administered by an independent body, the Centre for the English Exam for Teacher Certification (CEETC). Although Bishop’s assists in coordinating the test, it is not a Bishop’s examination. The Centre collects a fee for writing the test.

The EETC is written on a computer in a designated computer lab. Students cannot take the exam elsewhere, nor use a personal computer.

Dates and locations are communicated via email to eligible students every term that the EETC is offered.

If you register and attempt the EETC exam in your first-year in the education program, you will be eligible for a $50 credit on your student account to help cover the $85 fee of the exam. You will receive this $50 credit regardless of if you pass or fail the exam.

Take Note: The EETC is a requirement for the Third Practicum (EDU328/EDU329). Students in all B.Ed. programs are required to pass the English Exam for Teacher Certification (EETC) approved by the Ministère de l’Éducation, et de l’Enseignement supérieur (MEES) prior to the third practicum. Success on this exam is a requirement for progression through the program.

How do I register for the EETC exam?

Step 1:

Once the EETC exam date is confirmed information about the date will be sent to your BU email address. At this time, please indicate your interest in writing the exam by sending an email to your Academic Advisor, eduadvisor@ubishops.ca. Your information will then be sent to the exam centre authorizing you to write the exam at Bishop’s.

Step 2:

WATCH your email for registration instructions and deadlines from the EETC exam centre (very important). Register for a specific date and time slot on the CEETC website by following these instructions:

  • Go to www.ceetc.ca and click on ‘Register Now’ if this is the first time that you will set up an account to write the exam (if you are a returning student, click on ‘Login’).
  • Follow the instructions to register and to select a day and a time slot.
  • Submit your fee payment* as instructed.

Step 3:

Retain your proof of payment (receipt) and bring it with you to the exam. The date, time and room number of your exam is indicated on the receipt.

*Fee: Please note, that although Bishop’s assists in administering the test to its students, the EETC is not a Bishop’s examination and the CEETC will collect an independent examination fee.

How is the exam graded?

The exam is graded on a Pass/Fail (‘P’/’F’) system. Students will be notified by e-mail when their detailed score report is available to view on the CEETC website. Following this, the result will be recorded as EDU 100 on students’ unofficial Bishop’s transcript.

What if I have a Courses or Final Exam on the EETC dates?

In order to accommodate students’ varying schedules as much as possible, there are a number of EETC session times available, and students should be able to find a time that suits their schedule.

If you have a Bishop’s class on any of those days/times, you:

  • Should NOT register for a EETC session for any of those days/times when you have classes or final exams.
  • Will not be given time off or permission to miss your classes to write the EETC.
  • Will not be excused from a Final Exam to write the EETC.

What if I miss the exam?

  • Students who registered and paid for the exam via the CEETC website but cannot show up to write the exam due to illness must present a valid medical note to the CEETC within 5 days of the scheduled exam in order to receive a refund, less an administration fee.
  • Students who miss their exam could have the opportunity to write the EETC again when it is offered in the next semester.

What if I am registered with the Student Accessibility Services?

Students registered with Bishop’s Student Accessibility Services (SAS) may request to write their EETC exam with the SAS by emailing a formal request to accessibility@ubishops.ca. Take note that accommodated EETC exams are done by hand (Part 1) and by hand or computer (Part 2). Other accommodations may apply, based on a student’s accommodation plan.

What support does Bishop’s offer in advance of writing the EETC?

EETC Workshops & Info Sessions

The School of Education in conjunction with the BU Writing Centre offers EETC preparation workshops that focus on the objective language tasks of the EETC exam.

These workshops consist of 3 sessions, 2 hours each, and are schedule three weeks prior to the EETC exam dates.  These sessions run on Saturdays, not to interfere with regular BU classes.

These workshops are in addition to EETC information sessions conducted by the Academic Advisor.
