The Faculty of Arts and Science regroups all departments and programs at Bishop’s with the notable exceptions of the professional schools of Business and Education. The Faculty is organized into three divisions: Humanities, Natural Science and Mathematics, and Social Sciences. Also attached to the Arts and Sciences are the 550 seat Centennial Theatre and the innovative Foreman Art Gallery.
The Faculty has a vibrant research culture that encompasses everything from the ancient wisdom of Plato to cutting-edge development in computer vision and plastic materials. It houses three Canada Research Chairs and the four clusters of research excellence of the University: Stellar Astrophysics and Relativity, Multi-scale Climate and Environmental Change, Crossing Borders (Social and Cultural Identity) and Psychological Health and Well-being.
The Office of the Dean of Arts and Science serves as the academic and administrative anchor to approximately 80 full-time professors, another 80 or so part-time instructors, and close to 1500 full-time students.

We believe that the basis of a strong liberal education is a close relationship between students and professors. As such we maintain an average class size of 21 and a student/professor ratio of about 14:1.
We seek professors that have excellent research records and that are leaders in their fields, but we do not hire them unless they have a deep commitment to excellent teaching at the undergraduate level.
At Bishop’s, we value multidisciplinarity and approximately 50% of our students pursue a composite program (e.g. double major, major and minor).
Our departments are all externally reviewed every seven years to ensure that they remain current and engaging.
