Tuition rates – Thesis-based stream

The M.Sc – Thesis-based stream at Bishop’s University normally requires 20-24 months to complete. Tuition is charged during the first five terms (in sequence, including the Spring/Summer sessions) in five equal installments (of 9 credits each).

  • Any course taken in addition to the courses required for the program is charged at its nominal value (the per-credit amount multiplied with the number of credits of the respective course).
  • In particular, preparatory students will be charged normal tuition for the courses they take, plus the student activity fee during their preparatory term(s).
  • Bishop’s University will grant a tuition waiver to all M.Sc. Thesis-based stream students (applicable for each of the first five semesters of full-time studies, contingent upon satisfactory progress towards completion of your degree requirements – see the regulations in the Academic Calendar) of the normal tuition fees required of Québec residents registered in Master’s level degree programs. All other mandatory fees, international tuition, international health insurance or out of province tuition fees will be the student’s responsibility.

In addition to the per credit charge, a student activity fee (currently about $471) is charged every term.

  • Graduate students are considered full time for the first five terms of the program. They can petition the Division to remain full time for another term. Their status changes to part time afterward.
  • Starting from the sixth term, students will be charged a thesis maintenance fee (currently of $419.39) and no student activity fee, up to and including the term in which the final version of the dissertation is submitted to and accepted by the university.

Please consult the Fees section in the Academic Calendar for the per-credit tuition fees.  Note that both the per-credit fees and the student activity fees are subject to change without notice.

Tuition rates – Course-based stream

Students in the course-based stream are charged tuition according to the actual load each term. The expected load in a regular term is 4 graduate courses (12 credits). The minimum load to remain full time is 9 credits (3 graduate courses or the Master’s project). The load in the project term (normally a Summer term) is 9 credits. It is possible (though not recommended) to take additional courses in the project term; if so then additional tuition will be charged accordingly.

Overall you will be charged for 45 credits assuming no preparatory requirements and no failures.  Preparatory courses and repeat courses will be charged in addition to the base 45 credits.

Please consult the Fees section in the Academic Calendar for the per-credit tuition fees.  Note that both the per-credit fees and the student activity fees are subject to change without notice.

Financial assistance

Teaching Assistant (TA) positions are available but cannot be guaranteed. Students are encouraged to contact the instructors at the beginning of each term to inquire about any available TA positions for various courses. However, the number of positions is substantially lower than the student population.

With the possible exception of TA positions currently financial assistance is only available to the students enrolled in the thesis-based stream. The University offers a tuition waiver for the in-province fees (less the student activity fee) for qualified students. Additional support is also available competitively. Your supervisor may offer you some financial support as well.
