What did you study at Bishop’s?

Brooklyn: I completed an Honours in History and Global Studies with a Minor in French Studies.

What are some fun projects you remember from your courses?

My favourite projects were any of the term projects assigned by Dr. Gordon Barker. He would always give us many options for what we wanted to submit.

Brooklyn: My favourite projects were any of the term projects assigned by Dr. Gordon Barker. He would always give us many options for what we wanted to submit, some more liberal in their interpretation than others. During one of those projects, the class had inspired me to create a series of journal entries that would have been historically accurate and essentially portray a character viewing events from their perspective. I went so far as to create a detailed family tree just for the fun of it. Dr. Barker and I loved the final product so much that he recommended I submit it to History in Review, where it got published.

What opportunities has the History program offered you during your time here?

Brooklyn: In my final year I was working on an internship through the History department for the William’s School of Business. I was researching their history as the anniversary of the program was approaching. I was also the events coordinator in 2020. During the summer of 2020, I worked for both Dr. Berco and Dr. Webster. I was a research assistant for Dr. Berco and I was a cataloguing assistant for Dr. Webster and his work on Timor-Leste.

Why was History at BU the best choice for you?

Brooklyn: My main reason for choosing Bishop’s was to be immersed in a French town, but I realized later that Bishop’s was also the perfect place for me to study History. I loved the small classes. History was not a big program in my four years of study, which made it even better of an experience with the professors. We could chat with them on more personal levels and still learn as usual. If you encountered a problem, it was much easier to approach a professor. I do not think a larger school would have given me the confidence to approach the professors.

Why should someone come to BU?

Smaller class sizes and a very friendly staff make Bishop’s University an amazing place to study. The professors are accommodating and are always happy to help out if you have any problems.

They have offered me summer positions when I told them I was struggling to find work. In general, at Bishop’s you want to be there but the professors also want you there.

What do you hope to achieve in the future with this History degree?

Bishop’s made me more comfortable in my knowledge of history and taught me so much about the study of history and museums.

Brooklyn: My goal in the future is to hopefully find something in the museum industry without needing Graduate school. Bishop’s made me more comfortable in my knowledge of history and taught me so much about the study of history and museums. Without Bishop’s University, I definitely would not have learned as much about those things.
