Add French as a Second Language to your Bishop’s Degree

Whether French proficiency is necessary for you to reach your career goals, or you’re interested in living and working in a French-speaking environment, these two new French as a Second Language Micro-Certificates are for you. Both are one-semester, full-time programs aimed at developing your language skills in French.

  • MICRO-CERTIFICATE IN FRENCH FOR BEGINNERS (15 credits)
    • includes an experiential learning activity in a francophone business or organization.
      • First cohort: Fall 2023
  • MICRO-CERTIFICATE IN FRENCH FOR PROFESSIONAL INTEGRATION (15 credits)
    • prepares you to work in a francophone environment and/or to fulfill linguistics requirements for immigration.*
      • First cohort: Winter 2024

*After you’ve completed the Micro-Certificate in French for Professional Integration you’ll be ready to take the TEF/TEFAQ exam to get an official certification of your level in French.

**When embedded in the degree, Canadian students may save up to 65% and International students up to 85%

Admission Requirements

The minimum requirements for admittance to these programs are:

  • Having taken the Bishop’s University French Placement Test*,
  • A study permit and work permit (International students only), and
  • Permission from the Department

* A score of less than A2 for the Micro-Certificate in French for Beginners or a score of at least A2 for the Micro-Certificate in French for Professional Integration as per the Cadre européen commun de référence pour les langues.

How to Apply

  1. Contact Sarah Théberge stheberg@ubishops.ca to express your interest in this program. She will help you navigate the process.
  2. Take the French Placement Test. It is an online test that takes less than an hour to complete. You will need your myBU username and password.
  3. Meet with your Academic Advisor. They can help you plan the best way to integrate the Micro-Certificate(s) into your current degree requirements.
  4. Request a study permit and work permit (International students only). Permit requests must be placed several months in advance. Once you’ve expressed your interest in this program, we will meet with you to determine the best approach to obtaining the necessary permits on a case-by-case basis.
