ENGLISH FOR ACADEMIC PURPOSES (EAP) I

The Bishop’s English for Academic Purposes (EAP) Program I is an opportunity to improve your English Language proficiency while having a conditional acceptance into a degree program.  Our courses focus on academic English and are designed to prepare you for successful undergraduate studies.

A minimum IELTS score of 5.5 is required for entry to EAP I.

The 15-credit program is an immersive experience consisting of five intermediate level credited ESL courses plus a variety of cultural and social activities per semester.

EAP I – 15 credits (5 courses per semester)

Course requirements:

ESL103 (Intermediate English as a Second language l) for 3 credits.
ESL104 (Intermediate English as a Second language II) for 3 credits.
ESL110 (English for Academic Purposes I) for 3 credits.
ESL111 (English for Academic Purposes II) for 3 credits.
ESL125 (Phonetics and Pronunciation) for 3 credits.

The courses will focus on the academic English skills essential for students to succeed in any academic program, particularly precise academic reading, writing, listening, and speaking.

In addition, out-of-class program activities will give participants first-hand knowledge of Canadian culture and the social skills to live and work within that culture. Students who successfully complete the program are eligible to register in the EAP II micro-certificate.

ENGLISH FOR ACADEMIC PURPOSES (EAP) II

The 15-credit program is an immersive experience consisting of five high-intermediate and advanced level credited ESL courses plus a variety of cultural and social activities assembled to equip second-language students to ease into their degree program.

A minimum IELTS score of 6.0 is required for entry to EAP II or successful completion of EAP I with an average of 70% or better.

Students who successfully complete the program are eligible to register in a Bishop’s University degree-granting program without further testing.  The courses will focus on the academic English skills essential for students to succeed in any academic program, particularly precise academic writing and speaking.

EAP II:  15 credits (5 courses per semester)

Course requirements: 

ESL 122 (Advanced English Grammar: Tense, Stylistic, and Text Analysis) for 3 credits.
ESL 127 (Oral discourse II) for 3 credits
ESL 210 (Advanced Writing and Text Analysis) for 3 credits
ESL 211& ESL212 (Advanced Communicative Skills l and II) for 6 credits.
These courses are to be taken together and taught by one instructor during final semester.
