To the Bishop’s Community,

I am writing to advise you that I have decided to forego the second 12-month leave allowance to which I would be entitled at the conclusion of my second term as Principal of Bishop’s University.

I have been heartened by the many manifestations of support from the Bishop’s community and I am very appreciative of the Board of Governors’ steadfast support for me and the contract that we negotiated.

Nonetheless, as I have said since the outset of this situation, I will not allow my personal circumstances to take precedence over the best interests of the University. I do not want my deferred salary allowance to be an impediment to the Government’s willingness to help Bishop’s address the serious financial challenges we are facing.

I have been placed in an untenable position and it would not be possible for me to continue as Principal if I am compromised in my ability to represent the University in what will be critical negotiations with the Quebec Government.

Consequently, although the allowance provisions of my agreement are consistent with the norms for university heads in the rest of Canada, I have decided that it will be best to forego the additional leave.

Michael Goldbloom, C.M.
Principal and Vice-Chancellor
