Faculty-student collaboration: QUSC
In February 2019, Bishop’s University students teamed up with students, professors researchers and practitioners from McGill University, Université de Montréal, Université de Sherbrooke and University of Ottawa to examine the effects of globalization on international security and the security functions of the nation-state in different regions around the world during the second annual Quebec Undergraduate Security Conference. This conference was initiated by Dr. Sarah-Myriam Martin-Brûlé, a Politics and International Studies Professor at Bishop’s as part of the International Security in the Globalization Era (ISGE) project which unites researchers from three Quebec-based Universities — McGill, University of Montreal, and Bishops.
This event provides a unique platform for undergraduate students to share their ideas and research findings in the field of international security.
Dr. Martin-Brûlé and Junru Bian, a graduating student and B.E.S.T. recipient, teamed up to offer Bishop’s Political Science Department undergraduate students such a great opportunity. Junru began working on this conference in 2017, which involved collaborating with the CÉRIUM – the Montreal Centre of International Studies and Research and the Centre for International Peace and Security Studies (CIPSS).
“Students received an opportunity to hone their public speaking skills, formulate a research paper to support their arguments, and prepare for the presentation of such arguments in front of their peers, as well as other experienced academics and practitioners, much in the same way they would have to for a Master’s thesis, a graduate or even a Ph.D. conference,” Junru explains.
This conference was great preparation for students who are considering graduate studies, according to Junru: “I realized how rare and valuable this opportunity was as an undergraduate student. The undeniable, and often underrated, benefit of being a Bishop’s student is that you have a close and easily accessible community of professors who constantly seek to create better opportunities for you to embark on a more successful academic and professional journey. At Bishop’s, you can always find someone to help with answering your questions.”
