Philosopher Dr. Charles Taylor C.C. launches Donald Lecture Series – Activist Xiuhtezcatl Martinez and physicist Dr. Victoria Kaspi to follow

The 2019-20 edition of the Donald Lecture Series at Bishop’s University will offer members of the community expert insight on burning current event topics.

World-renowned philosopher Dr. Charles Taylor, C.C. opens the series at Bishop’s University’s Centennial Theatre on September 26. The McGill University Emeritus Professor, co-Chair of the Bouchard-Taylor commission on reasonable accommodation, and outspoken critic of Quebec legislation prohibiting the wearing of religious symbols by some public sector employees has also been recognized for his contributions to many branches of philosophy.

Xiuhtezcatl Martinez, an indigenous climate activist and hip-hop artist from Colorado, will be speaking at Bishop’s on January 14, 2020. He has also spoken at the UN Summit in Rio de Janeiro and addressed the UN General Assembly in New York City. He advocates for the removal of pesticides from parks, coal ash containment, moratoriums on hydraulic fracturing to exploit fossil fuels, and is a plaintiff in a youth-led lawsuit against the U.S. federal government for its inaction on climate change.

Dr. Victoria Kaspi, a distinguished physics professor at McGill University, will visit Bishop’s on February 5, 2020. A graduate of Princeton University who completed her Ph.D. under the supervision of Nobel-prize winner Joseph Taylor, she held positions at the California Institute of Technology, the Jet Propulsion Laboratory and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology before returning to McGill, where she was named Lorne Trottier Professor of Astrophysics. She is also the recipient of numerous prizes and awards.

The Donald Lecture Series are free and public events that everyone is welcome to attend. Parking is free at Bishop’s on lecture evenings.
