Dr. Richard H. Tomlinson (1924 – 2018)

Dear members of the community,

Dr. Richard H. TomlinsonIt is with sadness that the University has learned of the passing of Dr. Richard H. Tomlinson (Bishop’s-B.Sc.’43 and DCL’89) on Sunday January 28, 2018 in his 95th year.

Dr. Tomlinson attended Bishop’s University from 1940 to 1943. He contributed to the Mitre and the Yearbook, starred on the ski team, played basketball, was a member of the chess team, and was Secretary-Treasurer of the Students Association.

Dr. Tomlinson graduated with a degree in Physics and Chemistry and was awarded both the Governor General’s and Lieutenant Governor’s medals as the top student in his class. He went on to earn a PhD from McGill University in 1948 before beginning a long career teaching Chemistry at McMaster University. His research focused on the application of radioisotopes as diagnostic tools as well as for medical treatments.

After retiring in 1988, he became the founding director of Gennum Corporation, the world’s largest manufacturer of microchips for hearing aids. In addition to his many professional undertakings, Dr. Tomlinson loved golf and distance running. He once held the national record for the 30-kilometre run for those over 60.

In 1989, Dr. Tomlinson was welcomed back to Bishop’s to receive an honorary doctorate for his work as a professor, researcher, entrepreneur and philanthropist.  In 1998, the University was proud to honour him with the Alumnus of the Year award in recognition of his continued dedication to Bishop’s. In 2004, Dr. Tomlinson was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada. He was also a recipient of the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal.

Dr. Tomlinson is one of the most generous donors in Bishop’s history. The Tomlinson Internship Program provides Bishop’s students practical experience opportunities related to their academic program while earning money to offset their educational costs. When asked why he supported the University, Dr. Tomlinson explained that: “Bishop’s gave me a great start to my education, and paved the way for my further studies and career.  I’m happy to help students benefit from the same opportunities.”

The final lines of his obituary read as follows:

“At Richard’s request there will be no service and family and friends will gather privately in the summer. In Richard’s memory, please perform a random act of kindness and/or adopt a cat.”
