EWP (English Writing Proficiency) Exam

General Information

The EWP Exam is a 2-hour essay exam that helps students know how their writing skills (organization, grammar, sentence structure) match with what’s expected in their written assignments.

  • Students take the EWP Exam when they arrive at Bishop’s for their first semester
  • Students do not need to register for the EWP Exam
  • The EWP Exam is given at the beginning and end of the fall and winter semesters
  • Students are notified of the next EWP Exam date by a notice in their mailboxes or by checking the EWP Exam dates webpage
  • Students should take the EWP Exam every year (at least once) until they pass
  • Students who do not pass the EWP Exam should review their exams at the Writing Centre
