The U4 League ─ Acadia, Bishop’s, Mount Allison, and StFX ─ is now the Maple League of Universities

At a gala dinner on Wednesday night in Toronto, the U4 League announced that it was adopting a new name – the Maple League of Universities.

The U4 League was formed in May 2013 as an association of four small, residential, primarily undergraduate universities in three provinces.

Michael Goldbloom, Principal of Bishop’s University and Chair of the Presidents’ Group, said: “When we formed our alliance three years ago, we considered calling ourselves the Maple League, but we feared that we might be seen as being overly ambitious. Based on what we have accomplished and our agenda of new initiatives, we are now comfortable adopting a name which reflects our ambitions.”

“Working collaboratively allows us to expand the breadth and depth of opportunities we provide for our students,” Goldbloom said. “We have held joint academic conferences and student competitions, shared significant lectures and will be making it possible for students to take a course at another Maple League university without leaving their own campus.”

Next spring, each of the four universities will be offering a unique course for students from the four universities.

Goldbloom said: “I am confident that many more opportunities for collaboration will emerge as our universities work together to offer the best possible undergraduate experiences in Canada.”
