The history of Golden Key Internationally
Golden Key International Honour Society was founded by a group of highly motivated undergraduate students, much like you on November 29, 1977. Golden Key is the first global honour society. Since it’s founding, over 1.7 million students have been inducted as members at nearly 350 chapters throughout the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia, South Africa, and the United Arab Emirates. There are 17 chapters in Canada. In Canada, we are one of 17 chapters and have established networks with national, regional, and campus presences.
The beginnings of GK at BU
Although Golden key celebrates its 31st anniversary this year, the Bishop’s University Chapter has only been running since 2003. The idea to start up an honours society recognizing and encouraging academic excellence of BU students was born at a gathering at former Principal Janyne Hodder’s home in 2001. On March 21, 2002 the BU Chapter of Golden Key was officially chartered with Leigh Sowerby, an Honours biochemistry student as its first President. Leigh is now pursuing a medical career.
